I'm wondering what some of you are running for a breather setup. Got oil out dipstick tube on last poker run and tired of the mess. I looked at the tall bolt on breathers that Teague sells but they don't fit stock HP500 valve covers. I would like to keep the v/covers if possible.

having the same problem and have been to lazy and cheap to fix.
I think I'm gonna put in 2 pcv valves and vent to the throttle bodies on mine and put the tall breathers or leave what I have and run to a puke tank.
its a mess after any long hard run.
good luck.

I don't really have the room for a puke tank on transom. I'm also trying to get away from venting block gases back into intake because it robs power.

I just did this last weekend. Works great (PCV hoses are tapped into the tall breathers). No more stink (or oil) all over the place.

I don't know, on my old boat with the spark arrestor removed and at idle, swinging the breather hose over the carb. inlet dropped idle quite a bit. This is "dirty" air and dilutes the mixture I would think. Then you factor in how much flow there is at max. rpm/boost and to me it makes sense to keep it out of the intake charge. I could be F.O.S. though:D

I agree oil in the combustion, IC etc is not a good thing. I ran mine like that one year. Last winter I welded tubes on my valve covers and put baffled air cleaners on them. No more mess. However, I only run at high rpm's (5-7k) for for a minute or so, no long hard run's. The other way, which I'm sure local authorities wouldn't like, is to pipe it to your exhaust and it will create a negitive crankcase pressure.

Well, not going to screw with it any more:) Ordered up some polished v/c from Teague with 4" tall breathers:D

it doesn't take much blowby at high rpm to push the dipstick out the tube....
put a spring on it to hold it in....
the four inch breathers then will do the trick...

No more problems with oily mess on the valve covers...

Blower motors like to move air around. As the blowby increases the more breathers the better. I did mine like this...http://www.***boat.com/image_center/data/500/999blower_motor_1.jpg

Nice engine Petrofied. Is that a river or race setup? What kind of injection is that?

You run a primer? I think I saw you and you were squirting fuel in the hat....

lol, you need to put some nitrous nozzles in that spacer. :)
I just ran one tall breather on each side. It would run 8,800 rpm or so and seemed to work ok.

I have to do injection someday, nothing looks cooler than that!
What kind of speeds/ e.t. you guys getting?
The Teague covers have one 4" breather in each side, should be fine. Thanks for all replies.:)

Does anyone have a good source for the Offy style breathers? I'm looking for the flush mount 30 degree breathers.

Well, first run out with new valve covers and breather setup went perfect! NO oil at all. I picked up lots of speed LOL Found out when I took the Enderly linkage off to replace covers that arm had slipped on shaft again. Was barely allowing secondaries to open! Don't know how long it has been like that, possibly happened at Shasta back in June. With 3 people and full tanks speedo pointed STRAIGHT down. I know from previous GPS runs that the following picture was 105 gps upriver into 3mph current =108 gps.

HP350-thats great, I will dave the money on a puke tank and do the the
same. that pic is way cool. good way to check your guages.
does your oil pressure always drop to 40 or so at WFO?? The oil temp look good. Mine seams to be around 220 at WFO.
Will have to order the breathers asap. Keeping paper towels in the boat is getting old.

Racer- Oil pressure is at 60 psi now. I switched to 20-50 Valvoline synthetic and maintains pressure much better. Don't remember what weight oil was in at the time pic. was taken, only that it was dino oil and 7 lbs. boost. I will get a new dash pic. soon, now that I am at 9 lbs. boost. My oil temp. is now 220 after a hard run.

HP350-I have 2 different sets of pulleys now that may work for ya. I'm afraid to try them since they measure out at 17 and the other and 19lbs boost. But your bottom pulley is different.
whenever your ready. I'll send them to ya to try. Some day I may even put 20gals of straight 120 octane and try 19lbs. but for now 12-13 is just fine.

My upper pulley is 3 1/2" dia. Can't go any higher on boost with this motor setup.

Just a question here,i have 2 tall breathers on my v/c and i get no oily mess but i am getting alot of blow by out of the breathers and it is filling up the engine compartment. The engine is fresh with only 2 hrs. on it and was just wondering if i have another issue or it just needs more time to break in?

Man that Southwind Tunnel, looks good with blower motor, I had one a few years back that I thought mine was clean, Guys I have a 572 Donavan all aluminum and it sucks oil out of that breather at 7,000.00 like you can not believe. Motor runs so good i do not mind cleaning :)

Unless you have real engine problems.
Those tall breathers work really well. Even with a well boosted engine. Just fill them with fine steel wool. Fill them good but not packed full. I use alum screen in the bottom of the breather to keep the steel wool in. Plastic screen might melt. The crap they come with stock is useless.

Steel wool is a great idea. Some tall breathers are not baffled, Teagues were. And I should mention they have been an excellent company to work with. Stuff always arrives next day on porch. :D
