Here I am (at work, mind you) aimlessly perusing the internet and decide to go to progressive.com and load up some number for my boat and insurance. I tuck in all the appropriate numbers and come up with $545.00 for my policy. Holy sheeznit!! I am paying $953.00 for this past year starting in September.
I immediately call progressive and ask what's the dealio? She confirms the price and then tells me that it's going to cost me $16 to cancel my existing policy and start this new one at the new rate. Duh, where do I sign?
Whatever the balance is on your old policy, they will keep 10% of that for a cancellation fee. She did say that they had revised their boating insurance rates and felt I was getting an awesome deal. Good grief, I would think so.
If anyone has progressive as their carrier, I would do an online quote and then call them if it is cheaper and work the magic!:)

25 foot Nordic Rage, stock 496 HO (425 hp)
$1000 deductible on the comp/coll is the max they would do. I figured I'd pay at least that if something happened, so why get a ding on your insurance? Total replacement for $70,000 if it sinks or whatever. Probably not worth that now, but hey, who cares.
Yeah, $900 sounds like a dream for you guys huh?:)

Progressive actually LOWERED my policy this year from the 750 range to about 480 on their own, and we have the higher limits than minimum.

I have my Auto and HO insurance with AAA so I called them first for the boat policy, the main reason that I din't go with them is because their policies only cover the husband and wife for driving, if anyone else drives the boat and has an accident they boat is not covered, not that I would let anyone drive my boat you just never know when you may need some assitance. The Progressive Policy is inclusive all persons who drive the boat are covered...

I have my house and cars all thru AAA and I didn't put the boat on there cuz it was more money and they had more exclusions. Like if the boat goes over 70 they wouldn't insure it and I think they excluded parts of the river also.
I am under the impression that my ins (Progressive) limits the drivers to myself and my wife. Am I wrong? I better check.

Progressive is a good company. However be very careful of their forms. I'm pretty sure they only cover "listed" drivers.

Yes they can. They do pay their claims and pay them fast. However, they go by the book and if a driver is not listed or the boat was on someone else's trailer or being towed by someone else's truck, etc. Always check their forms. They are not like standard insurers. Progressive has their own forms.

Last time I checked...Progressive won't cover boats with over 500HP engines.

They did tell me that anything over 500hp would not be covered.
I made sure to ask the agaent that signed me up about the driver thing and he told me that "anyone driving the boat is covered, it is not limited to the names on the title". I better check on the towing thing though that worries me...

I was told by my Farmer's agent that they quit carrying recreational vehicles, meaning boats, which is why they signed me up with Formost. You guys sure you have a Farmers Policy?

The insurance on my american offshore cat was 900 a year. I had 500k limits and only a 250 dollar deductible. That was last year though.

I went with American National (http://www.anpac.com/AmericanNat/more/index.htm) . They were $100/year less than Progressive. I'm sure Progressive is OK but my own insurance company, USAA, who was working with me on the Progressive deal warned me about Progressive's practices. I now have a local agent with American National and they have a great classic car coverage for my stuff with wheels.
My quotes were,
American National $490/y for $50K, $300K/$100K, 470H.P., 75 MPH
Progressive $598/y
Farmers $800/y
High Quote was $2,200/y

My carrier is actually Foremost which is a Farmer's subsidiary I am told by my agent. When Farmer's shifted my policy to Foremost my premium dropped more than $200.
