View Full Version : Question? Why don't the West Coast Boat Builders...

Build boats with real windshields?? Is it a looks thing? Do customers not want them? Even Reggie puts them on his boats. Just curious  And the wife won't let me get a boat without a windshield :D

Canopies are cool. But only a few put those on only a few of their boats. I haven't seen any deck casts and only a couple of the mid cabins with them.

I don't think I'd really have a need for a windshield on my boat. It does not go fast enough to where the wind bothers us and I don't boat in the winter. Also I think my boat would look lame with a big windsheild on it. I guess it's just west coast kinda thang.;) :D

I don't mean some kinda big gangly Bayliner or Sea Ray looking thing. Something like a Fountain or Sunsation. Those guys make it look good. DCB has a very cool looking canopy on their 28'V. Of course being a west coast thing  If you got the money, I guess they will build you a windshield.

Compromise. Get wind deflectors installed. That way you can fold them down when you don't want to use them.

My friend builds these two boats with windshields ,and I don't think it looks bad. I'm going to make some functional one for my 24 spectra as well. http://www3.telus.net/spectrasonly/kavalk19.8.jpg http://www3.telus.net/spectrasonly/kazulin24.14%20copy.jpg

East comes with the least underneath the bow (cats at least), but more everywhere else. When Dave starts using foam core balsa, and vacum bags his boats with Kevlar, and epoxy resins then you can pipe up until then, keep leaving in the west where everything is not even close to the best.

Dude, when I get my ***boat mag and they do a special issue on East Coast boats I throw it directly in the recycle bin, they are not appealing to me at all, I would take a DCB, Ultra or any West Coast builder, maybe even Commander before I would buy an East Coast boat, IMO the East Coast boast are ugly as hell, but that is just my opinion...

They might call it mid west, but geographically it is far closer to the east coast then to the west.
Detroit, Michigan to San Francisco , Cali 2403 Miles
Detroit Michigan To New York 625 Miles
I would consider that way more mid east then mid west.

I would guess that it should run in the mid 120's no problem seeing that those DCB's work well with tall gears and props.
I need to finally meet you guys, were not going to be back out to the river until the weekend of Aug 14th. We should set something up for Park Moabi, with a board get together or something, last time we did it, it turned out to be really fun.

I can't speak for any other manufacturer, but we offer three different variations on our boat.
Short, most common in Havasu.
Medium, Actually offers some wind protection.
Tall, good for offshore runs or when you want to be very protected from the turbulence of the wind shear.
The whole point of getting a custom boat, is to get it the way YOU want it....

Just add in Sonic to the East Coast heavy hitters...game over.

Thus far no one has ever asked for real glass.
Everyone wants plexi in various thicknesses or hights.
But I suppose, if someone REALLY wanted glass, we could look into setting up a jig to do it. But it would be a SERIOUS investment to form the glass to the boat properly. Not something to be undertaken for the faint of wallet.

That's why I started this thread. Why doesn't anyone out there order a Fountain type windshield? What would that cost? $1,000, $5,000, $10,000?

A) More Expensive
B) Clunky looking, regressive styling
C) It is warm here, and you don't need the protection from cold
D) We don't want to look like an east coaster
E) Most models come with a raised faux windshield in fiberglass. You rarely look through the windshield anyway, so this just allows you to put more boat up higher, and get your gauges into your sightline etc...
Have you ridden in a West Coast custom that you found the wind to be too much on? Has your wife? Seems like a pretty blanket statement if she hasn't.
That reminds me of the "requirement" some women have for a porta potty.
The fastest way to ensure that you do not need to outfit your new boat with a porta potty is to have your chick clean out that honey bucket after a weekend using it. I have never seen one get used twice. Most men remove it from the boat to prevent your drunk freinds from figuring out that this is the place to deuce.
I think you will find no need for a windscreen. Deflectors are great if it is absolutely neccessary.

Honey Bucket?? I was thinking "Stank Kettle" and that's why we have a pump out :D As for my friends, lots of hazing and embarassment if they even think of getting near that head locker.
I still don't think a Fountain, Donzi, Sunsation look "clunky" or "regressive".

That's because you are in Tennessee. It isn't clunky or regressive there. But, the good news is, you guys can still buy 10 year old California boats and look totally modern down there! ;) Kind of like Cuba. A 1983 Datsun looks like a Ferrari Modena compared to the '53 Desotos rolling the streets...

All joking aside, why do you need a windscreen then? What is the rationale?
And, you never answered my question with regard to riding in a newer West Coast Custom. Have you, or your wife ridden in the newer breeds, and was that what solidified the decision? If so, what in particular didn't you like about them...

Decidedly not fair. Wind protection is actually pretty good on most boats with adequate freeboard. That is the trend.
The one you rode in probably had you hanging out like dogs balls. The newer breed is not like that.
And, like I said, you can buy a used 1989 Kachina in Miami Vice pink and teal and be totally contemporary in the south. ;) Think of the cost savings!

This is merely a sales problem. You need to change what makes her happy.
Most have no idea what makes them happy... they only recognize it when they experience it. The windshield problem is only a problem because somehow she has accepted that as buying criteria, without any experience to draw from. Change the experience, change the criteria.

All depends on what you do in a boat. In havasu a 10 minute ride to the sandbar with the wind in your face is great. When I'm at Lake Powell and 90 miles up lake its nice to sit behind a windshield. And if your staying for a few days the ladies definitly like the Head on board. Otherwise I always took it out for fear of a drunk buddy dropping transmission because he thinks its funny.

Well, you can always BRING a porta potty. I just don't think it is a neccessary engineering feature on the vessel. A lot of time and energy goes into them, and for emergent use, who needs a head? I need a towel and about 30 seconds of heckle-free time.
They seem like a huge waste of space, utility and lots of potential liability with regard to spillage or misuse.

We do long excursions on our river. And do lots of fall boating. So the windshield and pump out really are a must.
I have also read several posts on how much wind comes through the deck cats. That is the kind of boat I need at present. I'd love to have DCB or Eliminator type cat but family size and their buddies require a deck or open bow.

100% Wrong! Its called for each his own. I'm not a fisherman and dont have any use for a live well but I sure dont think they should stop putting them in Bass Boats. I dont buy Open Bow boats because I like to sleep in my own bed when I camp for 4 days but I dont think they should stop building open bows or deck boats.
With each type of boat you give something up for something else that is more important to you. I love deck boats because they are great for day trips, have 10 times the room of a closed bow but is it something I want to stay 3 nights on in Catalina? I dont think so. I want a cabin, refrigerator and yes a shiter! If I only made day trips at havasu, Parker or anywhere else I would own a party cat! But I spend decent amounts of time living on my boats so I look for other things.

I have a deckboat, and it is a pretty windy ride, but I think it adds to the experience rather than take away from it. Almost all of our boating is done at Havasu, where a breeze is refreshing, and the idea of being stuck behind a windshield doesn't sound very appealing. If I were to do anything, wind deflectors would be the option, as you could use them when you want, but fold them away the majority of the time. I wouldn't want a motorcycle with a windshield, or a boat.

I am confused. I thought you meant that you CAMP for four days. I didn't know you meant sleeping on the boat. Different story.
With each type of boat you give something up for something else that is more important to you. You are making my point. If you are going to be "camping" on the boat, or overnighting, I think that a porta-potty, a sink, stove, cabin etc... is very important.
I don't think that having one on a party boat is a neccessity. They are by nature a day boat, and you wouldn't spend three days in Catalina on it. I think you would rather have more room for coolers, speakers or seating. We decided not to build a head into this boat because in all of my time at the river, I have never seen one used. Period. Even if they were on board, they were off limits.
My only point is, that when a woman lays down the law and says... our new boat HAS to have a porta-potty, on a deck boat you could easily talk them out of it.
BTW, a porta potty is an option on the Trident. ;)

Nordic builds a deckboat... kind of.
There is really nowhere to put a windscreen on a deck boat. You forsake the second helm for seating for the most part.
Conquest has a dual helm model, that I am sure you could ruin with some windshields. ;)
For the most part, it is not a boat designed for screens.
Have you thought about Ebbtide? There are a couple of production deck-style boats that have more bowrider than deck characteristics, but still have windscreens and heads.
I would look towards big bowriders. Probably your best bet.
