Hey guys, the owner says the make is a 'Jencer' never heard of it and can't find any info on the boats or how good they are built. I'm guessing maybe the owner is clueless about the Make and Model. its a 72, 18ft, with a 455 olds according to him. http://images.traderonline.com/img/sandiego/SD040706ftp0307_1.jpg

Yeah I havn't looked at it yet. I have heard that certain boat hauls ride horribly on the water. I wouldn't want to buy something that wants to spend more time in the air than in the water at high speeds ;)

If I had to guess, I would say it is a Taylor SJ with the engine cover & windshield removed. The trailer looks like a Taylor trailer too. The rest makes sence too, length, engine and year. I am sure one of the old timers on these boards can tell you for sure. Looks like a clean boat.

Here are some more pics to help the identification of it.The motor looks good, not a BBC but still a good looking motor. Let me know if someone catches something fishy or wrong about the set up from these pics.

That's not a Taylor, neither is the trailer. Also Taylor SJ's never had a windshield the SS's did but not the SJ's.

Looks more like a Southwind or Kachina.

This is a Jencraft, could this be it ?,

Looks nice whatever it is, do you have a HIN ?, we could do something with that if it's not too old,

That does look a lot like it. I'm going to try to give the guy a call today and try and clear up some things. Maybe ask for HIN if someone can help me with what it stands for once I get it. Do they have HIN checks like they do VIN checks available for free on the net?

I live in Southern CA, the boat is in San Diego. It does look similar to yours. I'm trying to get a hold of him but I keep getting his voice mail...maybe its sold.

Sure looks like a Southwind to me. '72-up boats should have HIN on the stern. The first few letters tell manufacturer.

That sure looks like a copy of the Southwind, Kachina, Challenger, Tahiti and a host of other builders.
This hull and the Spectra 20 are about the most copied hull ever.
I had a Challenger that looked just like this one and it rode fairly well.

I just got off the phone with the owner. He said that he asked the original owner the same thing and he said it was basically a copy of the other hauls in that era. He said that most the boats made back then used the same design haul and this was one of them. I still can't find any info on 'Jencer' boats and he is going to give me a call asap to give me the HIN. He said a couple of his buddies that own jet boats told him his Jencer rides better than their boats. Damn its a 455 with a Jucuzzi jet though!

Here's a link to the USCG hull identification number (HIN) database, you can search by the first three letters of that number since 1972, or by company name,
http://www.uscgboating.org/recalls/mic_database.htm
As for the Jacuzzi my boat had better control and handled MUCH, MUCH better before I did the energizer conversion and the top speed is the same but it takes 2000RPM to get my boat moving at all now, before I could cruise around docks and ramps in complete control, now I look like a drunk rookie, $2,866. wasted as far as I'm concerned. if I keep the boat I will probably get rid of the energizer and go back to the Jacuzzi, my boat is too heavy and big for the volume of water it squirts now,
I would not want the Olds though,

Ok guys the owner just got back to me. He told me that the boat is a SOUTHWIND, made by Jemcraft in Azusa CA. The HIN is 053072. I tired that HIN link but got nothing back. I still think I'm going to pass on the boat, eventhough everything is new or rebuilt b/c of the Olds/Jacuzzi combo.

The first THREE LETTERS (usually) that appear BEFORE the numbers indicates manufacturer. Last two letters of the HIN tells us it is a lay-up from 1972.
Southwind was (is?, heh-heh...what's up brothers!) in Orange, CA.
If he doesn't just think it's a Southwind but actually mentioned the "by Jemcraft" part, then it probably is.
