BOAT ANCHOR

That's one of my best friends old boat. It's a 1970 Hondo with a 9 foot long deck. It was purchased in 1975 from Eddie Drugman, who along with Art Dufault (D&D Marine) did the wood decks for Hondo in the early to mid 70's. These guys also did the wood deck on Ray Caselli's 007 Panic Mouse, the wood deck boat he had just before his last boat. At the time my buddy purchased the boat, it had a 350 chevy with an early Edlebrock Tunnel Ram and two 600 Hollys, with velocity stacks. It had Glenwood wet exhaust manifolds, with Glenwood cast aluminum over the transom pipes (rotated 90 deg.so the bell ends almost touched each other). It had a belt driven Jabsco water pump, fiberglass fuel tanks, Finish Line cavitation plate and hardware (THE GOOD FINISH LINE STUFF THAT ONLY LEONARD BUILT), Caselli 007 steel strut, fin, rudder, and down pedal. It had 2 Hondo fiberglass seats, Casale V drive with 3% gears and press nuts in the V drive cases, Jones mechanical tach in the dash, and ss (teflon) plumbing. The motor installation was done on rails, with billet motor plates, rudder support, strut support, and a different style of V drive braces, which were cut out of 3/8 aluminum plate and bolted on one end, horizontally to a piece of angle aluminum, which was bolted to the V drive plate, and the other end bolted to a piece of angle aluminum and horizontally mounted to the stringer. It was done this way to miss the inboard steering cables. Most all of the billet aluminum was black anodized and had not been polished before anodize, so it came out a flat black finish. The boat had mahogany floors and laminated stringers (mahogany, ash, mahogany) and matched the gunwales of the boat which were done the same way. The boat was painted forest service equipment green (Drugman also worked for the forest service) with a black target up the side of the boat. The boat came on a Competitive tandem trailer painted black, with black fenders, chrome reverse wheels with baby moon hub caps. My buddy named the boat "Wood Pecker". The boat was mostly run at Pine Flats, Millerton, Success, San Antonio and Lake Topaz, with a few outings to Castaic, and Pyramid. My buddy sold the boat in 81 or 82 to purchase a V drive cruiser. The boat was sold to a friend's nephew in the Santa Ynez Valley. This new owner painted the boat white with a red/gold /blue band around the cap line. Lost track of the boat after that, until I came across pictures of it in the Images section this past weekend. I would like to talk to the current owner of this boat if possible. If you see this post, please contact Scott at (805) 584-3033. Thanks

:D Now we're talking! I went for a ride on candy kid right after he finished it about 10 years ago. Very nice boat! As a result of that ride, I searched long and hard and found a 1956 18' campbell flatbottom just like Jim's. I sold it but it is currently being restored by a buddy of mine. How's the 24' coming along? I'd love to see pics of that one...Thanks for sharing. Oh, and by the way, Nice Hondo!

Lowrider! you mean to tell me that after all this time my woodeck flat with chain steering wheel, crushed velvet interior, gold plated engine and dayton wire wheels on the boat trailer isn't lowrider style Damn. I would of thought the boat was more on the vintage V- Drive look from years past (check out their web site!) I guess I need to make a call to Miller Boats and hook myself up cause if thats considered lowrider you will see me with a serape and a Sombrero at needles next year Vato, Olay!

When this boat first came thru our gates at the beginning of summer, It looked like this. Built in 1965 by Dave Miller, it had a "plain jane" wood deck, all that was available in the '60's. It's 40 years old, so even tho it needed work, it was well loved. We love it when we get to work on one of our old boats.
After consulting with the owner, everyone voted to keep this boat vintage, with a wild deck and a few "Boat Rod" touches.

I LOVE the lines of the new 23' Evolution. I'm curious, what kind of pricing are ya looking at for a turn-key boat with a customer-supplied motor? I'm just looking for a ballpark number, basic gelcoat scheme nothing fancy, TH400, v-drive, interior, the works.
You guys did a great job coming up with a modern interpretation of a classic looking boat.

Awesome pictures on your craft MCB. Would you have some pictures of a vintage monkeypod wood deck flattie by any chance ? Also what happened to the 21 V-drive project a while back ? I see you have the evolution model thats pretty cool. BTW you maybe interested to check out my friend's website at www.kazulinboats.com , that's now includes the evolution feature on his boats. Great to see carrying on a classic design for the new generations of boaters to appreciate.

Thank you. The 23' Evolution is going to be comfortable, smooth riding and functional. Fuel efficient and powerful. We'll build these boats with running gear so that won't break or wear out. The Evolution has a composite layup and efficient bottom design. The acceleration is going to be thrilling. The Evolution is going to be a handsome package, strong and timeless.

We are currently finishing the pricing on the Evolution. We are going to market the first few at dealer cost, a very aggressive price. We will be putting price and other info on our web site soon. Thank you for your interest.

The paint highlights the Bubinga deck perfectly. A lot of thought went into these colors and the deck. Sweet little '65 Miller Custom Boat.

#1, The sailor has an engine in it so it was going to be floated immediately. If it's a 50'er, how deep do you suppose the harbor is?

Quaint little fishing village a few miles up the coast from us.

must be Deep, there's about 3 Piers out there (Avila Beach) so not so Deep at First. Pretty interesting area you've got your warning siren in case something happens in Hazard/Diablo Canyon (God Forbid) then on the Pier the warning sign that sez Rockets (or parts of) from Vandenburg sometimes fall there ! I like the 5 Cities area though. you like the Chowder at the Splash Cafe ? What's the Story with the Beaching Fishing Boat & the Sinking Sailboat ?
(V-drives are  )

Broke loose during the storm last week and washed ashore. Was going to be picked up with a fork lift and put thru the shredder the next day.

This is a boat I built in the mid 90's. 20' Miller Custom. I started building this boat as my personal family ski boat/demonstrator. It didn't last long, not even thru the build. I got a call from an old (not old, PREVIOUS) customer. He had owned a 20' all-glass Miller, loved it and was wondering what I was doing. "What are you working on, what do ya got in the shop?" He had just returned from the L.A. boat show that year. He was looking for something unique, something different, he was looking for a Boat Rod.

The hull bottom half is built of Kevlar with high density foam core and a fiberglass mix. This combination produces a high rigidity and stiffness in the hullI weighing half of a normal layup. When I chose the wood for the deck, I was able to thumb through pieces of this particular cut log. In the center of the log, I found beautiful Bubinga Pomelei with a large sap runout, something I've never seen before. I used the wood with the runouts.

The rigidity and stiffness of the sandwich construction of the hull in combination with the wood deck gives this boat a ride, feeling, sound that never comes with an all glass boat.
I originally built this boat with a 502, but when the customer bought my "ski boat" we started making changes and the boat evolved.

I took the 502 out and dropped in a Paul Pfaff 900 hp blown big block chevy. My customer told me the boat ran a 106+ m.p.h. surprising a few "old school" cruisers at the river.
My thanks go to Paul Pfaff, Andy Casale, Glenwool, Lightning, they all helped make this a real boat rod.

After his initial call, my customer showed up a few days later on his bike, with ten other guys on bikes, all flying their American flags. And a chase vehicle, they were going north for a couple of days. They all looked the boat over and he bought it on the spot. My kind of day.
The gentleman that bought this boat is a great guy to work for. It is with pleasure I call him a friend.
