Last time I was out the water temp was pushing 180 while idling.
It's a 496 HO, I haven't noticed it running that hot before. I know less than 0 about engines and would like to know if that is to hot and if it is what are the possible problems. Thanks for the help I'm going to Mohave this weekend and would like to avoid any problems. Just sorry I can't get there early enough for the dam run

Operating temp for the 496HO will often be around 180 degrees. No problem.

If running 180 is a change (increase) from what it normally runs at, I would replace the impeller. When was it last replaced?

I agree, that's about what I read on mine, in fact, I think it has a 180* thermostat. :)

..I agree, cheap insurance and could save you alot of grief on the water...change it before you go :D

The impeller has never been changed. The engine has about 50hrs on it and before last weekend it was running in the 150 to 160 range

Change it out before you go. Cheap insurance to what could be a disaster trip. Anytime something changes from it's norm, it is a warning sign.

Mine also runs right at 180, if youre really worried about, put some drive muffs on and run it in the driveway. Idle up to about 1000 rpm and see what the tempature does. It shouldn't take long to get to 180, it should stay there. If it starts going higher, SHUT THE MOTOR OFF IMMEDIATELY and get your impeller replaced.

I wouldn't worry so much about the numbers as much as the guage (assuming that it is working but not calibrated) is reading 20 -30 degrees higher. If the gauge use to read 100 and all of a sudden it starated reading 130 there is a problem somewhere. You might want to check the sending unit for the temp, its should be a cheap replacement also.

Mines hovered at 178-180 since I bought it. I just replaced the impellar and it's still running at the same temp.
