My buddy has a 01 Essex with a 496 and a jet. I am gonna help him change the oil. My question is what oil filter? When I go to the auto part store, what do I ask for, or better yet, got a part number?

Go to Napa, get the Napa Gold oil filter (it's a Wix and it's only $4) and tell them it's for a 2004 Chevy Dually with the 8.1.

Yup a remote. Two filters. The moron at Essex told be there was one. Why cant people get their shit stright. He friggin works in the service dept. I am gettin so sick of customer service.
I think I got it all strighted out. Thanks for the help.
By the way Disco, I was not tryin to flame you in any way. I was just sayin its the wrong one. Thanks for tryin. Hell even the guy who works as Essex dose not know.
Futs, I did see it. But I assumed (yes, I made and ass out of you and me) the filter you gave me was the one for the 8.1. My bad. Thanks man.

Wix would be a 55051, that's the standard Chevy filter with the back flow prevention. 55050 is without the backflow as I recall.
With Wix, they add a number in front of the 4 digit Napa number (Napa filters are made by Wix) to signify the application.
A 2 prefix indicates an air filter (I think)
A 3 prefix indicates fuel.
A 4 prefix indicates hydraulic filters.
A 5 prefix indicates engine oil.

Sounds like its not a Merc496HO but a Marine Power or a Indmar? If they still use the same dual filter setup when I had a 454Mag, it was Fram PH8A or equivalent in the dual remote filter setup

If you would have told me that it's a remote filter, then I could have told you it's the Ford filters. However there was no mention of the remote. I guess my mind reading skills are slipping. No good deed goes unpunished.
