SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Motorists who disobey road blockades and try to drive through deep water can face fines and be billed for rescue costs, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department said.
The warning follows recent wet weather and instances this week where vehicles became stuck on flooded roads and drivers had to be fished out by law enforcement officials.
Flash flooding affecting roads and other low-lying areas is a possibility the weekend, officials said. Another round of rain was expected to arrive late Friday and to continue off and on Saturday and Sunday.
"We are starting to issue citations and we have been issuing citations for people not obeying the road signs," said Mike Sales of the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department.
A California Highway Patrol helicopter had to rescue a man who stalled his truck Thursday on flooded New Hope Road near Galt. He now faces a fine, KCRA 3's Suzanne Phan reported.
Another driver was rescued by the sheriff's department after his vehicle got stuck along a flooded portion of Twin Cities Road.
Such rescues tax law enforcement rescources at a time when officers are busy, Sales added.
