Thanks Tom for clearing that up. Now can you please tell us who dented the rain gutter?

Tom Brown
08-08-2004, 10:56 AM
The rain gutter was damaged in a plow wind.
It seems that not many people have heard of plow winds but they are an extremely localized high force wind and at least as damaging as a tornado. The one that hit our area was roughly 100 feet wide, 140 mph in speed, and cleared a path that missed our property by about 50 feet. Our village was declared a disaster area. Heavy equipment and massive manpower was brought in to clear several thousand trees, the remains of houses, boats , cars, etc. Power is routed above ground here, so we were without power for three days while new poles were installed.
This happened in March of this year.
These winds come up extremely quickly with little time to react. My Dad was in the second floor of the cottage and he said he could feel the building rocking like he wouldn't have believed was possible but there was no way to leave as he would have been blown away. Because the cottage is cut into a hill, we built the walls with 2x10 studs on 12" centers to keep the dirt from crushing the house. It is an extremely sturdy building. That probably saved my Dad's life.
So the answer... a tree hit the garage and peripheral branches damaged the gutter on the way through.
More interesting than the TV story, eh? :)

Thanks Tom, I had not idea such a wind existed. I'm glad I asked the question now.

That line is a five foot long piece of spruce 1x2. Fastened to that strip with stapples (steel, not stainless :( ) is a light galvanized wire mesh. The wood is meant to stand the mesh off the exterior of the building. The boat and car block the view of a flowerbed that runs most of the length of the shop. In that flowerbed, right below that piece of wood, are planted some climbing plants. I believe the plants are sweet peas. While I'm unsure of the specific strain of sweet pea planted there, I am aware that several varieties exist. I will inquire further.
Has anyone found Waldo yet? If you do, let me know and we'll kick his ass off the property.

Tom I suspected some wire or similar material being attached as it appeared to be a slight shadow below the wood strip. I am a bit dissapointed to hear about the non-stainless staples though. This could be an inclement weather corrosion hazard allowing the strip to detach from the wall during a plow wind and potentially hurt someone. I'm sure California wouldn't allow it and would have some regulations in this regard.
Please let us know if you do determine the variety and color of the sweet peas. I'm kind of on the edge of my seat on this issue. If you can describe the approximate size of the plants and numbers present of each variety that would be helpful as well.
It may not be long before we have to transfer this thread over to the tech section.

No. Gobs of power. I've towed quite a bit with it but never in the mountains.
The only thing I worry about is the transaxle. Those Jatco transaxles aren't exactly known for their towing ability.
If you look at that picture again, have another look at the boat. 700 lb hull, 350 lb engine. It's a 16 foot boat. The trailer is really light too, I'd guess under 300 lbs. That's not far over the Nissan recommended limit of 1100 lbs tow capacity.
They specifically say the limit is 1100 lbs because of the 110 lb max tongue weight. Personally, I don't think the car is driveable with 100 lbs of tongue weight. It used to try to buck me into the ditch. I run about 45 lbs of tongue weight and it tows like a dream. Seriously, the car doesn't know the trailer is there unless it's trying to accellerate or brake.

yeah, we are talking 4 bangers there. You can either make a civic fast or dump a ton of cash on nothing. Actually the civics are only b16 or b18 and if he has it set up right it should be running low-mid 13s with what you said.

That is a friend of mines dyno sheet, 95 Maxima SE 5-Speed his two good friends have vipers that he plays with and he usually ends up beating the stock one and walking down the modded one on the top end. I will pull up the vids as soon as the server is back up.
Since that dyno sheet he added a 35 shot of NOS to cool the charge and made 540whp and 542tq. All that on a stock engine with stock trans, only mods are turbo kit with 12psi and the nitrous.

You are right, not bad for an economy car, when you look at what cars actually do the 1/4 in. For instance a stock GT Mustang is high 13s-low14s. The new Cobras run low 13s.
My cars are not insane fast yet, I just have some basic bolt ons, they should be running mid 14s solid. There are other guys with just bolt ons (filter, exhaust, pullies, intake) that run mid 13s all motor.

haha, call what you want...you are one of those guys who ends up coming up and saying "impressive, whats in that thing" and are shock to learn how little is in it. 16s and 17s? haha, are you thinking about a Maxima or a civic? BONE STOCK Maxima AUTOS run high 15s all day, while the BONE STOCK 5 speeds run high 14s-low 15s all day. And it is nearly IMPOSSIBLE to tank these motors, I have 290k+ on my 92 and 190k+ on my 97 and they both test out in spec. I also had a 75 shot of NOS on my 92 not too long ago. These engines are more reliable than any domestic, I bet you can only get 150-200k on a domestic before it drops below spec.
2002+ Maxima 6 speeds run high 13s/low 14s all day long BONE STOCK.
BTW: This "fad" will never die cause there is no fad. Truth is you can make imports perform well for a long long time and still have daily streetability.

Keep in mind these cars weigh 2975-3100 with all options. Any pics of your Mark? my buddy wants to get a Mark to add to his fleet, he has a notch 5.0 gutted to 2,750lbs, he too is shocked over Maximas, as before he knew nothing about them.
Pretty much, just for the strip, but the power windows, seats, and sun roof along with the radio will still work. http://www.hotboatpics.com/pics/data/500/19MVC-004lF-med.jpg
This is the only one I could find.

It is a 93, 4.6 dohc, that motor kicks ass, car still barks second gear. I am looking to get another with less miles on it as this one is getting some rust and I dont want to drive it any more on the street.

I know what you mean, they start losing power after they get older. I have a VE I am building right now I am thinking of putting 8:5:1 TTZ pistons in it with 20+psi of boost, but money is a factor...I am too in to the boat.

I am pretty sure my 92 f150 would be enough for what you are talking about!
My 71 mach 1 has a 429cj (ram air) that has a fresh rebuild with stock compression :D , a stock cast iron intake, no head work, & healthy hydrolic cam a set of block hugger headers with 3" exhaust out the back. It will run on a good set of tires a least a 12.50 with no work on the suspension. The car weighs 3780 lbs. Has nice cold air conditioning & I just put a gear vendor over drive in it so I could cruise down the freeway a little faster! :) It really is a nice driver! Now my brothers Lincoln... well lets just say he has the original hot rod lincoln. 1978 mark IV special edition in mint condition with sun roof etc... He has a 500 ci dual quad 9-1 comp big block with a nice hydrolic cam & a good set of exhaust. 4.30 31 spline posi with a c6 & a gear vendors over drive. That car is the sheznet! I will have to post some pics. It is a total pimp ride. Slammed on some huge welds, it looks like the bat mobile. A definit rice eating animal! :)

Mine is a J code car which was originally a 429cj "non ram air" car. I bought all the shit & made it a ram air car. I believe the r code is the 429 ram air. It is for sale like everything. Name the price! :D It is pretty nice. Metalic blue with a blue interior. I had custom made Magum 500's made for it with off sets to fit a nice chubby tire under the fenders. The car is 100% stock minus some minor engine mods & drives very well.
