Please help................. :220v: :220v: :220v:
I've got a bbc 454 .40 over, edelbrock heads, edelbrock intake, comp cam.
Spun a bearing on the bottom end a month ago, but engine ran fine. I freshened it up and the only change I made was the camshaft. Now 4 sets of intake gaskets later, still won't idle below 1000.
Any ideas?.........anyone?

Tn_, you say you changed the cam, what are the specs? LDA and duration @.050. If you put a big roasty cam in it it may not Idle down below 1000.

Fogger is right, if you are running a large duration cam it probobly wont idle properly below 1000 rpm's. Mine idles at 1100 rpm's anything below that and it stall out because of the Dur/lift specs. Gives us some specs and maybe we can help you narrow down the problem. Also what kind of carb are you running? Have you made the neccessary carb adjustments to compensate for the larger camshaft you installed?

Put a vacume guage on it & check the vacume at 1000 rpm. If vacume is too low then a power valve adjustment would be necessary & should aid your situation!

Although mine will idle down to 800 rpm (possibly even lower than that) I actually prefer to run my idle at 1000-1100 rpm. I find it's much easier to perform low speed manuevering with a bit more idle (easier to control).

Put a vacume guage on the intake somewhere & check your vacume!

Hey Tn_ What's the timing at? Another problem some people over look is that the lower the idle the timing also decreaces w/ rpm.I run the same cam w/msd dist locked out at 36 degree timing, just something to give ya some ideas..

May I ask why it's so important to idle at less than 1000 rpm? If everything else is o.k. ................ I'd just let it idle at the grand.

It's a CC 292, with a good deal of duration @.050. 1000 rpm is probably the best you could hope for.

I haven't had many dealings with a bbc much... mainly sbc. I guess I have been building too many diesels lately. I quit racin bout 10 years ago and it was all sbc with a full roller setup.
Thanks for the advice...I will try again in the morning

i had a problem with idling and it turned out to be the wrong intake gaskets
oval port on retangular port intake, changed that and now it runs great
just a thought
