I would like to put my BB Chevy over 500HP
This is what I currently have running an Berkeley 12JC A
454 .60 over (468)
049 Heads no work done to them
Stock Ingnition w curve
I believe stock Cam
Weiand 5981
2 600 Holley's
It never spins faster that 4800 RPMs and I have never GPS the boat but I think it runs in the sixties if I am lucky. I am guessing that the HP is somewhere between 350 to 400.
I have read several BB performance books and one suggested the following:
This build should run just over 500HP
468 Cid
10: Compression
Pocket Ported Oval Heads with 117cc Chambers
Weiand 8013
830 cfm Holley
MSD 6T
Competion Cams 292 Hydraulic Camshaft (244/244 duration at .050" lift, .556 lift,
110 degree lobe separtation
I was thinking of following this build with a couple of changes.
468 Cid
10: Compression
Pocket Ported Oval Heads with 117cc Chambers fitted with 2.19" intake and 1.88" exhaust valves
Weiand 5981
2 600 Holley's
MSD 6A Deluxe Package with rev control
Competion Cams 292 Hydraulic Camshaft (244/244 duration at .050" lift, .556 lift,
110 degree lobe separtation
What do you guys think any suggestions? How much HP will I have from this build? Will I have any problems?
Thanks
Jerry

I agree with revndave i prefer the rectangle port heads. If you spend the money in the heads and the valvetrain the rest you can save on.I have found that bbc love big lift cams and longer durations. But i have also found that parts will go through the bottom of the boat also.

My boat has been GPS @ 87 mph @ 6,000 RPM and I have oval ports. If your only spinning 4,800 YOU DON"T NEED OR WANT square ports (or a tunnel ram for that matter). That cam you are thinking of is really small especially if considering square ports. 4,800 RPM and a .559 lift cam will never see the benefits of a square port head. I'd look for a cam in the .600 lift range with durration @ .50 to be around 250. Lobe cntr should be near 110. Your A impeller may be holding you back as well. You can have all the power in the world but if your putting it through the wrong impeller you'll never feel it.
If your looking for heads pick up a good set of 049's. If you are going aftermarket get a set of AFR's or at the very least a set of the Edelbrock Performer RPM heads. You can easily make 550 dependable HP.

I've heard that Performer RPM heads are good to 700hp.

I have large ovals (for skiing ) but if I was doing anything more than family fun I would go with rectangle heads.
