I wanted to build something simple to add a roller to my trailer and I ended up making this thing. It should do the job...

Miller did you make that yourself? if so are you a machinist or something? If I put that on my trailer it would stand out like a sore thumb,,its the only thing that would look good on my whole trailer:D

Yes and somewhat. I was just going to fab it out of steel and powder coat it, but I was feeling a little crazy, so I went the billet route and threw in on a CNC at work.
It'll stand out on mine too, but what the hell. After I get it polished, I should be able to tow at least 5-10 mph faster. :)

Looks good, don't tell Mike at Rex about this he may want you to mass produce them so he can put it in his catalog, Funny thing about that catalog I had a dream last night that I got one in the mail and I was sooooo Happy :D

I am affraid the catalog is completly out of the question for all of us, just kidding mike
Miller I do have a question though I broke my long bolt holding my alternator to the block on my 455. It broke flush and not sure how to get it out of the block. I also need to replace the bolt how do I get it out of the block and can I get a bolt localy to replace it. I want to be back on the lake tomorrow if possible.

Hit the auto parts store and get a EZ out or screw extractor. Prefferebly something with left hand drill bits and if you are lucky it will loosen up while you drill. Just make sure you get a good centerpunch and make the center before you start drilling. If it drills crooked and you get into the threads it can be a pain in the ass. After you drill the hole, it might help to heat it up a little with a torch, not too hot, to loosen up any rust or locktite. I'm sure we can start a whole thread on removing broken bolts.
As for the replacement bolt, the auto parts store might have it....
Here's you basic extractor

Here's one I've never tried.

Well I got the bolt out, I tried that extractor in the second picture and did not seem to work, so I went to AutoZone and bought a extractor kit for $20 it worked with no problem. I am however having trouble finding a new bolt #8 3/8 x 5 1/2 Went to two different auto parts stores and neither had it. I figure Napa has it, but they are not open Sunday and I am sure not on Labor day also  I did find one at Lowes, but it is not #8 does it have to be? I am not sure what grade it is, but it is in the bins where you can grab a handful of them or get them in contractor packs.

It doesn't have to be a grade 8, but a 5 would be nice. Here's how you tell, count the lines on the head and add 2 to get the grade.
Which one do you have?
Grade 2

Grade 5

I bought 2 from two different auto parts stores but returned them because 1 was too long and the other too short. I need one that is 5 1/2 inches long to replace the the broken one. I went to lowes and they were either 5 inches or 6 in grade 5 and 8. they however had some that had no notches on top grade 2, I guess that was the correct size but did not get it because I did not know if the bolt would hold. The neighbor said that I should just use the all threaded stock, cut it down and put a bolt on the end.

Get a 6" in grade 8 and cut it down, as long as there is enough thread. The allthread is going to be Grade 2 and even weaker because there is no shank. A Grade 2 - 5 1/2" bolt should be fine for one day, didn't you say they had it Lowes?
You can order a 5 1/2" Grade 8 at www.mcmaster.com , but you wont have it tomorrow. You will also have to buy it in a pack of 5 for $8.72 and pay shipping, at least you will have 4 spares. Part number 91257A734

Or buy the 6" and put a bunch of washers under the head, then order the right one....

I was thinking about the same thing on the thread thru- (too weak.) Man I can not believe it is such a specialty bolt. How about a grade 8 6" and extend the threads on it? The only 5 1/2 inch bolt they had at Lowes is a grade 2 according to your pics. We have another hardware store locally called Elliots and they always seem to have the hard to find stuff, they will not be opened until tuesday though,,,I have ordered stuff from McMasters before. In fact I have their catalog. If all else fails I guess I can go with the 6 and order the bolt from McMasters like you said.

It would be pretty had to run a die over a grade 8 bolt, it's some hard shiat. Also, is the threaded hole deep enough to handle all the extra thread? Will washers or spacer under the head not work?

I think I would have to cut some of it off on the end to make it work, all in all it would be too much work to do all that. I just don't want it to look cheesy with a bunch of washers spacing the bolt out. You know in case a chick comes up and looks at the boat starts complimenting me on it, and Blam,,,,,she looks at the bolt and says "What the hell is that?" :D

Have you tried the big box stores like EAGLE or HOME DEPOT as they usually carry just about any bolt imaginable???

dgie
09-05-2004, 07:45 PM
I am going to check HD tomorrow, but they usually carry the same thing as Lowes. Not sure about the other one, never heard of it. I figure I will end up doing what Miller said and just stick a 6" bolt on there and hope no one notices :D
