I was reading in a marine jet manual that the thrust bearing for a Berk 12-JG needs about 40 full pumps of a grease gun to be full. I guess thats fine if you know its empty, but how you know when to say when? Do you wait for grease to ooze out of the front? or have you broken the seal by then?

Erik, you have two service holes on the JG pump.Put a zerk in one and a plug in the other.Remove the plug while you pump grease through the zerk fitting ,and as soon grease start coming out the hole stop pumping. That's all for the bowl. The thrust bearing has the shaft seal lip facing the pump,so it will let you know, when you see grease coming trough, you'll stop.In all cases of greasing, you'll feel a resistance in the greasegun when the cavity is filled. There was an auto luber available for a long time with a spring that maintained proper pressure to feed the bearing as the grease depleted.I have one on my jet.You just keep an eye on the level thats marked with a red line to maintain proper pressure. Most people were braking [???]this units off and complained to the manufacturer,so they stopped making them.

I think Spectra your talking the Tail bearing there in the bowl. The thrust bearing in the front of the pump yes needs 40 pumps to fill. put ten in the turn .25 of a turn the 10 etc.... After that. I put a 1 pump in it every time i go out. never had a problem with a bearing or seal fail

Blown,I covered the bowl question too, since that comes up too.The many jets I put together I never counted them how many pumps it takes. When the jet is on the workbench I turn the shaft while I'm filling the bearing with grease until it comes right through the bearing.Once you slide the yoke in ,then I pump more grease in.I never had a failure either http://free.***boat.net/ubb/biggrin.gif http://free.***boat.net/ubb/biggrin.gif http://free.***boat.net/ubb/biggrin.gif
