All day I've got a MicroSoft "down loading updates" Icon located bottom right.
All day it's been at 0%
I can't pause it, start it...nothing.
How do I get rid of it? :notam:
Thanks for any suggestions.

if restarting doesn't work.... try disabling the automatic update then go back and enable them ..(if you want them)

go to:
www.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
do the updates...then re-boot and you won't have that anymore.

Hard to diagnose from here but,
I bet you have "automatic updates" turned on.
I bet you have Windows XP.
I bet it is trying to download a couple hundred megs of Service Pack.
To turn off automatic updates
Open System in Control Panel.
On the Automatic Updates tab, select Turn off automatic updating; I want to update my computer manually.
If you choose not to use automatic updating, you can always install specific updates from the Windows Update Web site. Open Windows Update in Help and Support Center.
Of course I could be wrong....

Thanks for the feedback ;)
Yes I have Windows XP Home Edition (failed to mention that).
Tryed to restart several times no good...but will try other suggestions.
This is the 1'st time a "Downloading Updates" just sat at 0% all day...and didn't do anything. usually they load in a few minutes.
Thanks again ;)

You aren't on dial-up are you?
Well...yea :notam:
PS.
The above trick worked...for a second or two as I have the setting at (Notify me but don't automatically download or install them).
And correct it's whe Windows SP2. Think I should just cancel it???
Now the Icon reads "updates are ready for your computer-Click here to download these updates".
Automatic updates also (recomends) as Im sure you all know to leave it on "Automatic Download" for better protection.
again this is the first time when downloading it didn't budge from 0%. (all day)! :umm:
Thanks again for the suggestions.

HD heres another way to shut down auto updates permanently if you can follow me here.
open controll pannel . then look for administrative tools , then computermanagement, once the computer management window opens click on services , once you have the services showing in the right pannel . look for automatic updates , double click it , when that window opens you will see that the startup option is either set to automatic or manual , click that tab and select disable . then click ok . theres several other services running that can be disabled also such as background intellegent transfers, remote desktop, terminal services , fast user switching (if you're the only user), I have my windoze machines down to 17 running services , most people have in the neighborhood of 30 .
PM me for more .
GOOD LUCK
C.T.

78 MB of download on a dial-up is probably 10 hours or more. Don't bother - Microsoft will provide SP2 on a CD for a nominal charge.

You can leave the PC on. That's how I used to do it before cable.

SP2 has been a pain for me..... uninstalled it after 1 week. Pretty bad when other MS software won't run with their own update :boxingguy
