I am considering both systems for my 496 and have heard mixed feelings. Anyone out there running either system, and if so could you tell me how it has been. Thanks

I'm sorry, but I feel that on a boat a centrifugal will be better. I know 99%, if not 100% of people on this board that have superchargers have gone Whipple, but honestly, the ATI will make more hp on the top end and still give a good low end punch. The whipple doesn't add any length or height to the motor I don't think, but I believe the ATI adds a little length, so if space is a concern, the whipple would when.

He will give you the straight answer.
I have a whipple on our 27' Dana. It produces 620HP and 700+ ft/lbs of torque. We went from stock speeds of 65 to a top end of 78 MPH.
The "stock" top end of the 496 is NOT built for boost over 5lb of boost. You should, at a minumum, replace the pistons for increased reliablity.

I had a Procharger on my last boat a 496 HO for 2 full summers trouble free and gained 10mph on GPS not BSS (= Bull Sh*t Speed) To me they are both good products.

So, what are you trying to say??? :D
All my speeds are GPS not BSS. Garmin 178c to be exact. ;)

BSS... thats good... can I use that??....
BTW I take everything OGS says with a little skepticism given his point-of-view. :rollside: ;)

OGS, it wasn't directed at you at all. It's funny all these guys give you there speed numbers and it's 73mph and I asked them really what did GPS say and they say that's the Speedo that came in the boat (water pickup).
I gave my buddy my Garmin GPS V after he said his Hallet 255 was doinging 73mph with a 496 HO on the speedo and ran 62mph on the GPS. So what I meant if you have GPS then that makes it better than BSS.....

One of the nice things about the 496 and the Whipple is the level of electronic integration.. The ECMs talk to each other nicely.

Man, GPS's must be heavy, are they made of depleted uranium? Every time someone puts one in their boat it really slows down :frown:

LMAO :rollside:
Also do you think that the radar waves push against the boat to slow it down too??

Like OGShocker says.....Mine put out 620HP.
I went from 61 to 75 MPH.....
I never had a problem with the pistons and I was running about 5 lbs.

OK.....I found the old post....
I was the proud owner of the first Whipple Charged 496 MAG HO.
I is the one in the Whipple magazine add. The motor was installed in my Advantage 27' Victory.
The stock motor dyno tested at 420 HP and after the blower install, it dyno tested at a little over 620HP.
The additional 200HP got me 13 MPH, with 6 lbs of boost. I was running a 22P prop and went up to a 26P Bravo I. I went from 62 to 75 MPH.
The boat ran at 75 MPH on GPS @ 5,200 RPM with 50Gal of fuel and 4 people. I have calculated that I am getting about 1.3 MPG.
I had about 70 hours on the motor prior to adding the Whipple and have put on about 70 more with the Whipple. Not only was I happy with the 13 MPH gain, but the hole shot was incredible. This boat now has a completely different personality.
It was a pleasure working with Art, Dustin & everyone at Whipple. This project was a lot of hard work and the end result is a great product. The customer service at Whipple is second to none.
I have since sold that motor and built a Whippled 565 @ 875 HP. The additional 250HP now took me up to 87 MPH on GPS.
Well.......Thats the story.......Hope it helps!!!!!
:)
