Flat S did you buy that boat?? Man O man that had to have sucked big time!! The was the very first time ever that boat was in the water right??
I was getting all stoked seeing it on a new trailer, getting wet and then the MAJOR buzz kill. What a bummer, sorry to see that happen to anyone.
So who is gonna fix it, Jim or John Miller? It's gotta be one of those two.

I second that, I was admiring the boat, then I had to double take seeing it off the trailer, I was wondering if it slid off or something(it could happen I guess).
Anyway sorry about your misfortune, too much horsepower?

That boats all wood! Man, I'm sorry for your misfortune. Looks like lotsa horsepower. Screwed on hinge for the cav plate? Set back cav ass. with long arms. Bury the plate and stand on it, I'm surprised the whole transom isn't gone. Glad you recovered it. Man that things pretty.

What happened????
Dry-rot, maybe ???NO not dry rot. The plate hinge was not thru bolted, they had fastened it with 1/4 x 2 inch lags  Had some fuel delivery issue the first day and a bunch of little stuff! Set plate on day 2 and let her run somewhere around seventy plate ripped outta the bottom of transom rotated around on the tuurnbuckles slapped the shiaat outta the top of the transom and ripped a whole at the top mount! The pit crew was just a little too relaxed on the loading part :D All is good she got loaded after a while and is in the shop safe and sound motor out and repair begun!Should have it back together in a month or so! Doing it here in Montana already got one stranded in the 909!! :D :D :D Real good wood boat guy here! Yes SD that boat had never been in the water it just was'nt right! The Miller's were pretty Jacked about the woody going into service.

Why were the Miller's jacked up about using it? I guess I thought boats were meant to used and enjoyed? I personally don't believe in trailer queens and garage orniments, but then again thats only my opinion. Glad to see your using it hope your able to get it repaired soon it definitley looks like a beautiful boat.
Best wishes on getting it going again soon.

A fellow ***boater said something to me that I thought I would mention.
The studs that drive the turnbuckles seem to be too straight, don't they need to be angles farther up?

Brian Brian I thought the same thing! I don't believe that was the cause of this problem. But there is gonna be a little geometry work done this time. It was my understanding Miller only rigged the underwater gear. Plate was handled at previous owners shop. No way were lag bolts gonna secure that hinge! :2purples:

http://www.***boat.com/image_center/data/500/119All_Pictures_125.jpgYour right Brian, there is no way the cav plate has enough down travel with the arms being at that angle!!!. They should be at 11:00 o'clock. I also think the turn buckles are to far out on the end of the plate. If they were moved in about an inch that would help. Just my .02.

looks like just flipping the plate bosses around would do the trick. Or help out a bunch.

Billy, if that happened to me I'd have Jim Beam bottles all the way to the end of that railroad tie!

09-27-2004, 09:24 PM
If you study the first few pictures on page one of the transom, I didn't notice an arm on the transom bar to activate the cavitation plate or any type of through hull fitting for a mechanical linkage to pass through the hull to connect to the missing transom bar arm. How is the cavitation plate adjusted while the boat is under way??? As Acceptance would say "kind of makes you say Huuuummmmm." Looks like there might be a good argument for the installation of transom braces.

I think my Dad turned over in his grave when he heard lag screws!!!???
If you are not going to hook up an adjustable plate, you need to lock the control shaft to the pillow blocks so it can't move.
An adjustable plate is nice, but not a true necessity. Keep in mind that adj plates on our boats didn't happen till the mid 60's, so that means our boats were very capable of 100+ mph passes with stationary plates.
If you need any help or questions answered don't hestitate to contact me.
We are very glad to see this boat being USED, and NOT sitting around in a garage.
And you are exactly correct, my Dad only installed the underwater gear (strut, rudder log, shaft hole drilled , and fins).

Control shaft was locked to the blocks just not near HD enough, got that handled and went to work on gettin the plate set 3 trys! Then the lag bolt dealio oh well :yuk:
