View Full Version : BUILDING A MOTOR FOR PIPESCLEANS OLD BOAT

I AM BUYING PIPESCLEAN BOAT ON SUNDAY AND I NEED SOME ADVICE FOR MY MOTOR. FIRST OF ALL I HAVE A 68' CHEV 396 WITH 375HP (STOCK). I AM BUILDING MY VALVE TRAIN FIRST. MY UNCLE IS DOING THE JOB BECAUSE HE IS GOOD. HE WAS TALKING ABOUT A 3 DEGREE CUT ON MY VALVES,IS THIS GOOD. THE CAM I AM PLANNING TO RUN IS A COMP (MARINE CAM). IT IS A HYDRAULIC CAM WITH 292@INT,296@EXH--244@.50 INT,246@.50 EXH--VALVE LIFT W/1.7 ROLLER ROCKERS IS .568 INT,.578 EXH AND THE LOBE IS 110 DEGREES. MY ROCKER ARMS,PUSHRODS,LIFTERS,AND VALVE SPRINGS ARE ALL GOING TO MATCH MY CAM. THATS WHAT MY CATALOGUE SAYS AT WORK. IS THIS A GOOD RELIABLE SET UP TO RUN? I AM LOOKING FOR GOOD SPEED BUT THE MAIN THING IS RELIABILITY. I WANT TO RUN MY BOAT AND NOT HAVE TO WORRY THAT MUCH ABOUT PADDLING. ALSO A FRIEND SAID NOT TO RUN A GIRDLE AND ANOTHER ONE SAID TO RUN ONE. I NEED SOME INFO BECAUSE THIS WILL BE MY FIRST BOAT AND I WANT A GOOD RUNNING MOTOR WITHOUT ALL THOSE CRAZY PROBLEMS. SORRY THIS IS SO LONG I AM TRYING TO BE SPECIFIC SO I WILL UNDERSTAND THE INPUT FROM YOU GUYS.

i used a cam similar to that in my old race car.it is a good choice.But what size boat is it and what impeller are you using because an a impeller would limit your rpm to around 45-4700.So to take full advantage of your power i think you are going to need a b cut.The bbc 396s like to rev that is what i had in my car and i would go throught the traps at 6200rpm.also what is your comp ratio i would want at least 10-1 with that cam too.
My boat now has a cam near those specs and i'm runnin an 11-1 bbf 429 with a b+cut impeller and i'm spinning 52-5300 rpm at around 70-72

THE HULL IS 18FT LONG.

so i take it its a low profile jet boat.Then go with that cam and build that motor to rev.that cam will be reliable as it is a hydrualic.but you are going to need to cut your impeller down to get the motor to rev i would think a b will work but i would try it out first with what you have
