View Full Version : Do you rev your motor under London Bridge ???

6 Dollar Boat
09-28-2004, 07:43 AM
Sat. 9/25 I was going through the channel with a buddy who hadn't been there in 20 yrs. A cop boat was going in from Thompson's Bay at the same time so I slowed a little to let him go first. I followed him all the way past Shugrue's, when I heard a cat going the other way rev his motor under the bridge. I told my buddy that guy must be a rooky or he's trying to impress his friends. Then I noticed the cop boat making a slow U-turn, then accelerating then the lights come on...I don't know what happened to the guy but my point is if you don't do anything stupid to attract attention to yourself, you most likely will never get pulled over and hassled.

I did it all the time until I saw somebody get pulled over for it. I also realized that I use about four dollars in gas every time I do it so it is not financially sound to keep revving like that.

Yeah...the police sit there and wait for guys to rev.

definitely not with anyone, especially cops around. Although I'm sure I've done it somewhere along the lines. You know one of those winter type days when you're the only boat down there or something

We do it about 3 times going through the channel.... before we foul a plug... our motor was not meant to idel for that long... that's why I hate going through the channel... we normally try to avoid it all together.

What is the ticket they give you exhabition of speed ???? Or some lame thing like desturbing the peace ???? I don't have any trouble pissing off anyone so I just try to not draw attention to myself anymore than I already do.

I had to do it once when the boat was new. :D
I think of it as an invitation for the boatcops to come on over and give the boat a db test :(

Did it in my dad's old Campbell and then the throttle linkage broke and we had to get towed in. :2purples: Haven't done it (much) since.
I only tend to do it when I am idling right next ot a buddy. Like revving at a stoplight next to a friend. Because obviously my boat is better than his, no matter what he's got! :D

I used to years ago when I had my old jet with a set of open headers on it. I remember once driving through on the far side next to the walk way by the shops and there was a group of Asian tourist standing there not really paying attention, checking out the bridge. I put it in neutral and let it rip. I thought they were all gonna shit themselves. I scared the shit out of em. Seems kinda mean when I think of it now but I remember my buddies and I were laughing our asses off.

Boatcop

My, how things have changed.
When I was patrolling up there with the Coast Guard ('78-'81) we were running Spectra 20's with 454s (bored .30 over), Cassale V-drive, Accel ignition, L88 Vette intakes, Holley 850 dbls, and Hardin Marine thru-transom exhaust.
We rapped the pipes every time we went under that bridge. The boaters loved it, and the tourists just stared.
I wonder if we were still there running that boat, if the Marina would let us launch? (Not as if they could make us NOT launch.) :D

Only if you exceed the noise level. Also, it kind of makes you a magnet for the noise police.

I like the sound it makes! it is very cool to hear it under the bridge, sort of a Tim the Tool Man grrr, thing. But thanks for the heads up, I coulda got stopped on Sat cause I did it right after I passed a cop, but he didn't even look back. Dont need that. Plus, revving most of these engines in neutral is an invitation for throwing a rod, which Shaken, not Stirred did a few years ago with his 496.

Maybe if your sitting in the boat it sounds cool but to this day, while standing on the beach in the channel or riding in a boat behind a guy that does it, I have never heard anbody say " thats cool" or "woh, that thing sounds bitchen". ITs more like,"what a dork". If any one of my friends did it, I wouldn't hate on them, I would just bag on them for a long time. Its all fun and games until somone rev's their engine under the bridge :D

Do you rev your motor under London Bridge ???Your survey should have a follow-up question: Do you honk your car horn when going through a tunnel? I'll bet there's a correlation. :boxed:

I usually rev up my stereo with a copy of Disney's "MAIN STREET ELECTRICAL PARADE"!

yes on the bridge (not anymore, though) and a definite on the tunnels.

No on the rev, no on the tunnels, but my wife does honk in the tunnels....Also, on the rev....I don't think anyone would think my revving my weedwackers would be that cool....plus, I don't rev my lawn mower, so I not about to start revving my outboards.....however, I do get a tingly feeling when they are running 6K+ RPMS for long perionds at a time :)

"I also realized that I use about four dollars in gas every time I do it so it is not financially sound to keep revving like that."
If you use that much gas in a couple revs under the bridge...financing should not be a problem. Driving a boat the burns that much in a couple revs should be...if your main concern is gas that is.
I've rev'd a couple times under that bridge. So what? I say, lighten up...no big deal. I'm thinking you typically won't hear OB's doing it...maybe because that weee-ringa-dinga-whee sounds even worse amplified? There could be a difference you think? Sorta like honking in tunnels and leaf blowers early Saturday morning and jet skier endlessly circling are annoying. How many jet skiers rev under the bridge? Whoa I bet that's impressive!
No. More like annoying.
The sound of BB thunder? Never annoyed me never will. In my opinion, not all sound's the same even though some compare. But that's just me.

this question should be directed at the turbine boats................
who does an "afterburner lite-off" when idling under the bridge-? now THAT
would be cool....................
and yes, I've seen the blue jet/turbine christmas boat parade pic thank you.

Guilty from time-to-time.....
But it's my KIDS that make me do it !!!!
Hey Midlife-Adv......I threw that rod when I "fell on the throttle", not from reving it........It still pissed me off......
