Yes, Jim did a number of V- drives. That boat along with 'Coles', Finish Lines' and ' Hi Tech' were all laid up by "Joe's Tooling". Jim did one boat that was in the LA Boat show and in magazines, it was a beautifull thing, blown V- drive, exposed (like a flat boat), and an awsome "Gary Baca" paint job. One of the above names first 'designed' that boat (1978) and the others "just happened" to start building it. They each made their own changes to it, but the bottom remains the same. Joe of "Joe's Tooling", is a really SWELL GUY! He seemed to have no hesitation in "taking from here, and doing it there". Not the kind of guy you could trust with your money, but a guy who always could say "we can do that", no matter who he 'ripped off'. Jim has always built every boat from 'his heart', and it shows!

Lange built a few vdrives like that hull, the one described above by bigkatboat had a blown ford a few were built as open bow v drives as well , this mold was actually the original Cole then it was sold to Cobra in Oregon after Jim left Coles he bought the mold from Cobra a few years latter jim made a new deck for the old bottom and called it a Sabre .

Yes using the old bottom of the mold the Sabre has a big euro style wind shield . My brothers boat was pulled out of the original deck mold .

See the word "rushin'" on that nice boat? Well the 'original boat design' was 2 1/2" lower in that area. That boat is the 'later' hull and molds. I have a Cole sales brochure that actually shows (without comment) the early style hulls, (a tan and orange jet/ open bow) and the "new" Cole owned molds 2 1/2" taller hulls. They make no comment about the differences and expect you to 'not notice'. One of the 'original molds', came from the back yard of a glass shop in Ontario Calif. It was modified by cutting the deck 'gunnels' up , so that the upper deck would be easier to paint (gelcoat). That same set of molds got larger strakes and a 1 degree 'delta pad'. The pad was over 8' long and almost 14" wide. The 'fore bow' deck was flat, and later versions this area has a "crown" or "curve" to it. I do know that the first "Cole" molds had a 1 1/2" "kick out" in the transom, this was quickly removed as it did not have the 'visual impact' that they wanted. IMHO, the hull is very quick and runs very fast in smooth water, the wide pad makes it a 'handfull' in rough chop. I do remember a few people trying to run this hull as a 'ski racer', it was fast, but would not take the rough stuff. After making the changes to their molds, Finish Line laid up 2 hulls in 1978, they worked with the boats and ended up making no changes the the hull (mold) bottoms. They worked very well as they were. I also know that Cole was trying anything he could to get into the 'day cruiser' market. He bought "Continentals" from 'Smiliey's Fiberglass', in the later 1970's, until he got 'this' boat out on the market.

HOW WOULD YOU GO ABOUT GETTING ONE....????

The styling of this boat is a direct influence on how the Cole flatbottoms were changed. If you look at this hull and the 'Tr3', and 'Tr4', you will see the similar deck shapes as it rises up from the cap rail. This boat was a head of it's time, as far as style, and hull design. But by todays standards, it lacks rough water control, and cockpit room. In 1978 it was designed to be "Dad's flatbottom", and back then it worked very well.

I have a 1989 21 Cole V-drive works great as a lake boat solid with a fair ride
loves horsepower. The last I knew the mold at Coles needed to be redone
that was before Jim closed shop.
