So we were at havi this weekend, and on friday the ranger was there with his tester. I talked to him and he stated this year they will be informing the public about the law, next year testing and warning, and then maybe after that they may give tickets. So, I had him test my boat. Him on the dock and my transom facing him at ~40-50ft. It read 83 at idle. I have a HTM with a 496HO with through transom exhaust.

At least they are a certified law enforcement agency inf the State of Arizona and conducted the test in a much more consistent manner with respect to what the law is. I've got no problem someone testing our boat at the new CA law specificatios or the AZ specifications, I know we'll pass both.

Don't forget guys -- you can pick up your own sound level meter at Radio Shack (they have an analog version for $39.99 and a digital one for $49.99) -- a handy thing to have when you're curious about your own boat, as well as when you're trying to duplicate readings taken by "others". :D
Happy boating...

Yup.....EXACTLY what I have been saying all along...these boats WILL pass if tested at the proper distance - i.e. 50 FEET. Ten feet - no way sometimes even with mufflers. But at 50 feet all of the stock engines I've tested passed. Many without mufflers. The California test beginning January 1st will be much harder to pass.

At what distance? Distance is very important.

Prosthogod, thanks for the info. The gentleman seemed to be reasonable and doing his job. Thanks for taking the time to get your boat tested, it will help in the marina fight. A test done properly by a trained LE official sure isn't what is happening over in the marina.....

50' at 3000rpms
What about at ide?
We recently tested a stock 496HO with Rex Marine PowerSilencers mounted on the transom above the waterline at 82 db(A) at 50' and 3,000 RPM. These would seem to be a good choice for you.
The 100 db(A) at 3,000 RPM makes me question the distance or the noise meter's accuracy. The HP525 we tested a few weeks ago should be down around 84 - 86 decibels at 3,000 based on the delta between the 496HO and the HP525 at idle.
Who did your test? An LE agency?

Paker LE did it for me..
the Whipple was not pushing any boost with out a load.. so I dont think it would make the motor any louder..
We did it on the water so he could have been a little closer or further then 50' but it was his standard test.
Im seriously thinking of the Silencers you were talking about.. I do most of all my boating at Parker and I dont run my boat at night.. so Im pretty safe there.. Most of the cops that I have got to know out there know that I dont drink so the most hassle I have gotten from those guys out there is just to tie up and BS .. :D
If your interested in doing some other tests with S/C applications Let me know.. I would be happy to participate ;)
