Are there any direct drive couplings for alternators ? Do most alternators spin by belt? I designed a direct coupling that works but I'm experiencing some problems, looking for suggestions.

I've been running a direct drive alternator for a couple seasons.
The coupling is just an off the shelf lovejoy coupling.
I had to do some machining to get the depth right.
It took me a while to figure out that the powder coated mounting bracket was preventing the alternator case from getting a ground and so it wasn't charging.
I ran a seperate ground wire from the case to the block and it's been working fine.
It turns 1/2 normal speed so has to get up to about 3000 rpm to start charging.

I run the kit from Rex Marine as does Jet Driver. Neither of us have any probs and they work great. :rollside:

Good point. Anodize is also an insulator as well as paint on the block surface so a separate ground wire is always a good idea from the case.

the pic is only an example, they all sorts of differnt set ups, or you can get custom and just use the drive.

If you have a v-drive. Because I drive my tach off the balancer, I had a pully made that wrapes around the drive line, and mounted the alt. on the stringer. But it is in a cruiser and the floor board covers it up
