I will start off by saying I had a cold. The basic stuffy nose sometimes running but I could always catch it. Then I was having a hard time reading. I figured it was just that I was tired. Then my left eye started to twitch a bit but nothing big, and water alot. OK that is just being sick. And then my jaw started to hurt at the joint and had an ear ack. Ok just real sick. Took some Vitaman C drank lots of fluids. Well last night my face started to act up. I mean lack of control on the left side. Just figured I was real sick still had 101 temp. Woke up this morning and well had absolutely no control of the left side of my face, actually it just was just like it was just there. No wrinkles no dimples no nothing. When I smile the right side works perfectly left does nothing. Lift my eye brows and the right side works left side does nothing.
My temp now is 97.3 and my eye just waters and hurts a bit. BTW I can't taste anything at this point.
Any ideas ???

Well first off I'd see a doctor.
Sounds kind of like symptoms of a mini stroke or somethin. (no I'm not a doctor). But if it is that I wouldn't f around thinkin about getting some help, like pronto. Strokes are caused by lack of blood to the head. Strokes are not good. Strokes often cause malfunction of one side of the face or body.

I went to the 24hr clinic in Laughlin today. My plan is to see a real Dr. tomarrow. Went to the climic to day and they said if the symptems persist come in again. All they did was take my temp and blood pressure and send me on my way. What a bunch of quacks.

sounds real similar to what happened to my dad. Turned out to be Bell's Palsey. He went to a doctor they looked at him and they couldn't do anything for it. A few months later everything went back to normal. According to the doctor he was lucky. About half of the people go back to normal, the other half permanently lose control of the muscles on that side of the face.

No Dr. here either, but I would get checked out ASAP. Something quits working....that's not normal. Hope everything checks out okay.

Wow! That sounds awful! I've never heard of those symptoms. I know an abcess tooth will make your face swell up. (I have kids)
Dang! The clinic gave you no idication as to what it might be? What Looosers!

It could be some type of infection going on in your sinus cavity. Something may be growing in there that shouldn't be.
I deal with all kinds on Toxic Mold horror stories and hear similar things. A microscopic intruder that landed in your eye or up your nose may be reproducing inside your head. :jawdrop:
As it grows it pushes the nerves and messes up the muscle coordination. That would explain the fever.
Definitely go to the Doc.

sound like Bells palsy, your dr. may order an MRI to see if the facial nerves are inflamed or if hes convinced its Bell's it will be a 4 + week recovery. youll notice it gradually getting better. A friend at work has it and hes slowly starting to smile out both sides again. A stroke or CVA would more than likely take out the whole side of your body.
Always see a dr. though
not a dr. just play one at work

Sounds like Bells Paulsy to me also...but I am not a doctor. My mom had this type of thing happen about 5 years ago, but it went away after about a day or so. When she went to the doctor they told her it could be the begining of BP but if the non function of her face doesnt persist and she feels ok not to worry about it??? She had it happen one other time but not since then. She is perfectly fine now. So go to the Doctor and let us know what happens.

i doubt very much that you had a stroke. it's very unusual for a stroke to present with only facial paralysis (i could go into extensive detail about this if you would like). what is definitely sure is that your Cranial Nerve 7 (the one that controls your facial muscles) is affected in some manner. the most common cause of facial paralysis is Bell's Palsy, but there are other things that can cause this too. fortunately, people afflicted with Bell's Palsy usually spontaneously recover. as it is a thought to be caused by a herpes simplex virus infection of the facial nerve root, there's not alot they do for it except treat the symptoms and let the patient recover on their own. since you reported feeling sick and had a fever prior to the onset of the facial symptoms, i would definitely not forget to include the possibility of mumps. without knowing your immunization history, this is probably lower on the list of possibilities. however, it does fit with the clinical scenario so be sure to mention this to your physician when you see him/her. mumps is a viral infection that affects your parotid gland and can also affect your gonads (usually males). the reason this is significant is that your facial nerve (Cranial Nerve 7 rememeber) passes directly through your parotid gland at the angle of your mouth (the partoid glad produces saliva and is located at the angle of your jaw below your ear). if the gland is swollen and inflammed it can definitely put pressure on the nerve and cause some symptoms. let also not forget about a ear infection too. part of the facial nerve runs into the inner part of the ear. a serious inner ear infection can affect this nerve. and finally, you don't want to miss a brain tumor. while this is probably the last on my list of differentials, i would still ask you physician to do a head CT if the paralysis is still present or is worsening. like i said, you don't want to miss one of these bad boys as they can be bad news if not diagnosed early. anyways, hope this helps a bit. and hope you feel better. good luck.

I have NEVER heard of Bell's Palsy, let alone know what it is!
So I did a little research and I have to say, your symtoms sound exactly like Bell's Palsy!!!
What is Bell's Palsy?
Bell’s palsy is a form of facial paralysis resulting from damage to the 7th (facial) cranial nerve. This nerve disorder afflicts approximately 40,000 Americans each year. It can strike almost anyone at any age; however, it disproportionately attacks pregnant women and people who have diabetes, influenza, a cold, or some other upper respiratory ailment. In addition to one-sided facial paralysis with possible inability to close the eye, symptoms of Bell’s palsy may include pain, tearing, drooling, hypersensitivity to sound in the affected ear, and impairment of taste. The common cold sore virus, herpes simplex, and other herpes viruses are the likely cause of many cases of Bell’s palsy.
Is there any treatment?
Recent (April 2001*) studies have shown that steroids are probably effective and that the drug acyclovir combined with prednisone is possibly effective in improving facial function. Other treatments are usually aimed at protecting the eye from drying at nighttime. Some physicians may prescribe a corticosteroid drug to help reduce inflammation and an analgesic to relieve pain.
What is the prognosis?
The prognosis for Bell’s palsy is generally very good. With or without treatment, most patients begin to get significantly better within 2 weeks, and about 80 percent recover completely within 3 months. For some, however, the symptoms may last longer. In a few cases, the symptoms may never completely disappear.
What research is being done?
The NINDS supports an extensive research program of basic studies to increase understanding of how the nervous system works. A major goal of this research is to develop methods for repairing damaged nerves and restoring full use and strength to injured areas.

Thats pretty scarry. How can they be so sure? I passed out a couple months ago due to stress/hunger and they put me through more rediculous tests than you would believe to make sure there wasn't anything wrong with my head etc. Some would argue that there is a lot wrong with my head.. But at least that stuff won't hurt me (mostly).

Jim (squirtin thunder) is a good friend, and after getting a phone call from him yesterday telling me of his problem, needless to say, I was worried. He's really one of the nicest guys you'd ever meet, and although I've only known him and his family a short while, I consider him a true friend. Unfortunately, we live about 500 mi. apart, and as much as I want to try and help, there's not much I can do from here except be supportive.
The reason I'm writing this is to say that I'm really overwhenlmed by the response and good will from all you people on this board who have taken a moment to share your experiences and kind thoughts with a perfect stranger. Your kind words and support have really made Jim feel better, and I thank you for helping my friend. I just couldn't read all this and not say something, and I wanted you all to know that it hasn't gone unnoticed, or unappreciated. I guess this is what this sort of "community" is all about and I'm proud to be a part of it, in my own small way.
Just wanted to say thanks, very much. :D :chi:

Jim
Yes, a small perscription for something like Xanax can help take the "edge" off and bring you back down off the ceiling.... Not everyone reacts to medication the same, so the dose he has given you may not interfere too much...He has probably prescribed you like 30 mg's to start with decreasing doses over a period of time?
Look on the bright side, you'll be able to go through your motor, blueprint your hull, and stich a new ulphostery before the weekend is up if ya really start zinging :D
Seriously, if it begins to make you very unconfortable, ask for just enough of something to make you feel comfortable again.

Stupid me !!!! Last night I was going over the boat fixing small things. Checking hardware and just giving a real good once over. Saw that the bow eyelet was looking kind funky. So I raised the bow up and saw that it had been pushed in and bent. I know that this happend in the U-Haul insedent while moving out here. But didn't know it was that bad. My main concern was at the back where the intake bolt holes were cracked and the pump was damaged. So I called Todd and talked to him about it. After taking up about an hour of his time, we decided the best way to handle this was for me to go get a paper hooded suit and googles to help protect me a bit better. Well I did as we agreed but I must have got some foam in my eye anyway. My left eye is blood shop and swollen. The problem is I can't feel if anything is in it. So I am going to have to go get the chunk of juck taken out of my eye today. I geuss it really doesn't matter how much you protect or plan shit always happens.

My face feels like someone is doing a tapdance on my face. Uncontroled muchle movement twitching. I am learning how to talk better out the side of my face. I am washing move towels because of my drooling problem. My jaw is starting to hurt because I am talking out the side. The sterio balance is driving me crazy, and my eyesight is a bit blured still. Yah know I thought about that, but it is so hard to think. The pain is only on the right side of my head and it is all the way down to shoulder. This is quite scary for me. Being I depend on all my faculties to do my jobs. OK,
Today I went back to the Dr.s at lunch and the prognosiss was that my brain is swelling. They took a bunch of blood for testing. Messured my head and reissued a perscription for prednisone. I am suposed to go back tomarrow to have my brain remsured, if it has continude to swell they are going to switch to another med and put a shunt in my head to help releive the swelling. They have said that this is one of the rare cases of Bells Palsy that is severe. At this time they are sticking to that story. I kind of hope that they find something else wrong in the blood tests. So it can be adressed also. This is on of those pay back things I geuss. Things are not looking good right now but I never quit and I am fighting this as haard as I can. I am not doing anything for ttthe next couple of days. I plan on just resting my brain. But then again even if I tried I couldn't. It is so bad now that every time I stand up I get sick.

Thank you everyone.
Jim
Hope you get well fast, Jim...........I know this area is a tough place to get sick with something like you have. There's not a lot of options like in Vegas. Our hospital just expanded it's ER a few years ago an you still have a 3-6 hour wait.
Hang in there and there'll be some prayers from Kingman heading your way.

i doubt very much that you had a stroke. it's very unusual for a stroke to present with only facial paralysis (i could go into extensive detail about this if you would like). what is definitely sure is that your Cranial Nerve 7 (the one that controls your facial muscles) is affected in some manner. the most common cause of facial paralysis is Bell's Palsy, but there are other things that can cause this too. fortunately, people afflicted with Bell's Palsy usually spontaneously recover. as it is a thought to be caused by a herpes simplex virus infection of the facial nerve root, there's not alot they do for it except treat the symptoms and let the patient recover on their own. since you reported feeling sick and had a fever prior to the onset of the facial symptoms, i would definitely not forget to include the possibility of mumps. without knowing your immunization history, this is probably lower on the list of possibilities. however, it does fit with the clinical scenario so be sure to mention this to your physician when you see him/her. mumps is a viral infection that affects your parotid gland and can also affect your gonads (usually males). the reason this is significant is that your facial nerve (Cranial Nerve 7 rememeber) passes directly through your parotid gland at the angle of your mouth (the partoid glad produces saliva and is located at the angle of your jaw below your ear). if the gland is swollen and inflammed it can definitely put pressure on the nerve and cause some symptoms. let also not forget about a ear infection too. part of the facial nerve runs into the inner part of the ear. a serious inner ear infection can affect this nerve. and finally, you don't want to miss a brain tumor. while this is probably the last on my list of differentials, i would still ask you physician to do a head CT if the paralysis is still present or is worsening. like i said, you don't want to miss one of these bad boys as they can be bad news if not diagnosed early. anyways, hope this helps a bit. and hope you feel better. good luck.
Yea, what he said!

Well the good thing is all the pain in my head is gone from The Bells Palsey. But with my emune systen shot to shit I now have a bad cold. The Dr. told me that it could get bad if I don't be carefull.
Update on my face, the left side is not working still. But the tear ducts are so that is good no more drops. Still can't see right and I am a bit dizzy at times. I have brusing on my brain from the swelling and that will go away with time. I did get a bit car sick today coming from the Dr.s office but not nearly as bad as I have in the past weeks. So I think I am doing better, along with the Dr.
One thing that I have noticed is that I get tired real easy now.
Thank you everyone
