5/16 bit and 1/8 npt thread tap that will get it done

How do you go about keeping the metal shavings out of the pump on install. or does it matter.

It really doesnt matter, because it's on the back side of the wear ring. But if you want, have someone hold the shop vac tube up against the drill while you drill and tap it. It will suck all of the grindings into the shop vac.
BTW, the proper drill size is 7/16", and the proper tap size is 1/4" x 18 NTP.
