Sorry for your loss, but getting everyone back home to boat another day is 1st and foremost........Now, any idea at all what went wrong? Maybe you can save someone else's boat from the same fate. We've seen the effect, what was the cause?....MP
PS: "2440", that is cool, shows your heads in the right place, and assures me that you and your boat were a class act.

I have to ask what do you think caused the fire. Was there any sign of trouble before it caught fire? Maybe some of us can learn from this. Did the motor stop running first. If it went boom it must have been a fuel leak? I am sorry about your loss :frown: and I’m glad everyone is OK. ;)

sorry if this is too personal, but will your insurance cover this loss? I don't have our boat runnin yet, so it's not insured, hope it will cover the cost of a new one for you.
I am so sorry you had to experience this, I am glad (as I am sure your family and friends are) that you and yours are safe.

Gary, I hope you are doing as good as one can be after a day like yesterday... looks like you are holding a possitive attitude and I am soooo sad to see those pictures... it breaks my heart to see your boat like that... but better the boat than you or anyone else...like many have said you all cannot be replaced. Hang in there and welcome 2440!

Kinda curious, did anyone get pictures of the coast guard and/or fire department spraying her down? Someone commented that the amount of water sank her. Was that the case? Inquiring minds want to know...

jdogginla
11-15-2004, 07:39 AM
There are pics of her getting sprayed down..........the fire just wouldn't go out, but in all honesty before she went down due to the amount of water in her there was nothing left but an empty hull. :(

Be sure to demand from your insurance carrier that you have to have a new boat ordered ASAP and that you want your claim satisfied ASAP.
Get your taped depsosition out of the way and start writing a letter the day after your statement and claim filing.
Were you insured for replacement value or just a flat value that will determine your payout. It is not a pretty process however, they will eventually pay. The fact that you have pictures and the depth and it is in salt water makes the salvage value useless to the inurance company.
Just remember call your claim handler every two days and ask on the progress tell them you want to order a new boat and it will take at least 4 monnths or so.
personal experience.
Good luck, i am glad everyone was safe.

do they require that he salvage it like they do on the lakes? I wouldn't think so its so damn deep.

jdogginla

Coast Guard on scene said that he was not responsible for salvage due to the depth of 2440.

2440, (what's the new screen name mean anyways?)
I was sorry to hear that it was your boat that went up.. :( We could see the smoke from about 10 miles out, we figured it was some sorta fishing vessel or the like. If it's of any consolation, I really liked the gelcoat when I got a chance to see it in person over the weekend. I look forward to seeing what you have in store for us on your next go around here in the future. Will you be sticking with kachina?

I did a lil research today........it turns out that there is a "trench" that runs a good chunk up the coast. That apparently is right where we were. The "trench" is apparently approx 1/2 mile wide.

So sorry about your boat... as has been already posted, glad all the peeps were ok... The most important responsibility that a boat captain has is the safety of his/her crew... from the looks and sounds of things you performed that responsibility admirably under the worst of circumstances... Kudos to you...
Peace...
Rich

Yea, 2440 fooled me too. I've been all over that part of the coast between the mainland and Catalina and the charts all showed the 300-400 feet. Never new about the trench. I know of a few more boats out there that were never salvaged, they must be stacked up like cord wood!
Good luck on your next project...
