Miami Police Review New Tasered-Child Case
Sat Nov 13,12:18 PM ET U.S. National - AP
MIAMI - Police have acknowledged using a stun gun to immobilize a 12-year-old girl just weeks after an officer jolted a first-grader with 50,000 volts.
Police Director Bobby Parker defended the decision to use a Taser on the 6-year-old boy last month because he was threatening to injure himself with a shard of glass. But Parker said Friday that he could not defend the decision to shock the fleeing girl, who was skipping school and apparently drunk.
According to the incident report, officer William Nelson responded to a complaint that children were swimming in a pool, drinking alcohol and smoking cigars on the morning of Nov. 5.
Nelson said he noticed the girl was intoxicated and was walking her to his car to take her back to school when she ran away through a parking lot.
Nelson, 38, said he chased her and yelled several times for her to stop before firing the Taser when she began to run into traffic. The electric probes hit the girl in the neck and lower back, immobilizing her.
Nelson said he fired "for my safety along with (the girl's) safety." Paramedics treated the girl, who went home with her mother.
Parker said department policy permits officers to use the Taser to apprehend someone, but he said he expected his officers to use better judgment, especially when police had no plans to arrest the girl.
The first incident had already exposed the department to more criticism for its use of Tasers, which it has begun distributing in greater numbers to officers.
The 6-year-old boy was shocked on Oct. 20 in the principal's office at Kelsey Pharr Elementary School. Principal Maria Mason called 911 after the child broke a picture frame in her office and waved a piece of glass, holding a security guard back.
The boy had cut himself under his eye and on his hand when officers arrived.
"The police could have handled this better," said the boy's mother, Kathy Rojas. "They did not have to shoot him."
Parker said that, in light of the disclosure of the second incident, the department will review its policy.
And so it goes

They will sue the cops for using the taser or sue the cops for letting her run into traffic and getting hit by a car. Either way the cops lose
No wonder so many cops have a bad attitude. They get no thanks for doing their job and get shitty pay to boot. :(

That's a "shocker" (yes, pun intended)
In addition to reviewing their use of force policy, maybe they should also review their training and hiring guidelines since common sense seems to be stuck in their holsters.

Well put C-2, i am sure this isn't the last of the stories to come out of Fla. these are just the ones making the news, alot of folks are going to see the money train( how sad) and start telling their stories, and this is just Florida, i have a feeling this is just the beginning, what a sad commentary on life for law enforcement in the US, they get slammed everyday for the .01% actions of the Knuckleheads, sorry Bill not you, that use force they felt needed at the time, sometimes it's the right call and well we have seen the results ofit being the wrong call.

I agree, it sucks to see LE slammed for every move they make. I’m a believer in letting coppers do their job, good or bad and if a bad guy get’s a little roughed up – comes with the territory of being a bad guy.
In other instances though, LE or the government should be held accountable to the actions of renegade cops and for the actions of improperly trained officers. And it’s just not an LE thing – the same can be said for a carnival ride operator or crossing guard, a vehicle or an over the counter drug; there are many people and things we trust our lives to.

I am a firm believer in discipline. If the parents do a crappy job of raising the kids they blame it on society and when they get into trouble they blame the police or legal system for handling them improperly. Control your kids! The kids today (not all) are the laziest ever (tests prove this). They have no motovation to do anything and they know they can get away with anything. If I did the thngs alot of these kids do and get away with my father would have tanned my arse so bad! And heaven forbid I say "dad if you spank me again I will call the police and have you arrested". If I did that I wouldn't have been alive to call the police. I was never beaten but I was spanked and punished. All well deserved. That 12 yr old knew the difference between right and wrong and didn't care. He!!, if I thought she could of hurt or killed me, my partner or an innocent person on the street I would have shot her dead without a moment to think about it. I know in this case she wasn't that dangerous, but to immobilize her with the tazer was a great move. Keep her from hurting herself or someone else. Where was the family of this 12 yr old that she is out drinking!!! Parents better be in jail! And they had the nerve to say the police could have handled it better! She is alive no thanks to the parents. They (the parents) could have done a better job in raising the girl. If I was the cop I would have said that right out loud for everyone to hear. Bad parents blame everyone, good parents don't need too.
Sorry, I will get off my box now.
