Fume Detectors

In light of the recent accident involving Force 26's boat (thank God no one was seriously injured), I began wondering why we don't see many (if any?) boats with fume detection devices installed by the manufacturer? Instead of installing that clock, air temp gauge, water depth gauge, etc, how about saving room on the dash for this simple little device that could save your life! I believe some insurance companies will give discounts on top of any automatic fire distinguisher discounts. This kit can be installed for about $300.

Fume detectors come as standard equipment on many larger boats. Mine has gone off a couple of times. In the "big blue" the constant pounding of waves loosens up a lot of fittings. I've had a fuel supply line come loose. Now, I either safety wire or loc-tite a lot of items. I also have an automatic halon extinguishing system.

I'm currently re-thinking my gauge layout. I have very limited space and I already relocated my hour meter to the engine compartment. At this point, I'm not against drilling another hole and installing one...

I suspected that some, if not most, East Coast manufacturers include these as standard equipment. If I find out that Spectre also includes them as standard, I may be sorry I started this thread! :hammerhea :cool:

Funny how this thread came up. I was talking to a friend who does BIG yachts in MDR about the unfortunate events on Sat and he was wondering why our boats do not have this device. I hadn't known about it till then but it is apparently a must-have on larger boats. Some even have an ambient temp gauge for the engine room.
We are giving serious consideration to this item.

I don't knoiw if it is necessary on a lake boat which would explain why the are not standard equioment. We have a depth gauge and an automatic halon system on our boat. Both provide a 10% discount on the insurance premiums.

I had a halon system and a fume detector on my boat... the detector was a box mounted under the dash with an audio warning.. just set it and forget it. The halon system won't do diddly after the fumes have exploded... it might hamper the flames a little... Gasoline fumes are the most explosive... after the explosion... it's a little late to worry about the extinguiser.
