How much does a 38 footer cost new? How do you like your boat? Do they hold up well? Why are there so many for sale? Seem's to me that their deck has not changed for a couple of years. Just lookin for some info on these boats. Looks like you can get a 1999-2000 for a pretty good price.

I don't have a Top Gun...but I'd say the reason that those are cheaper is that they are the last year of the non-stepped hulls. The stepped hull will add a few MPH.
Also, the newer Guns went to the covergirl cabin, which saves some weight.
They hold up VERY well, but like all boats, it's gonna depend on the previous owner.

What year did they start with the stepped hulls? Whats a covergirl cabin?

I think it was 2000 or 2001. They are designated as T/S Top Guns.
Cigs have full liners...so there's not alot to rot. Those East Coast builders make em to be abused...
A covergirl cabin is a nice way of saying that they leave out the cabinets and a lot of the liner that goes with it. I think they have just a berth and a couple benches...

The weight (and bottom) make a difference in speed. My boat has a full cabin, weighs around 1,200 lbs more, but is 3' shorter than Gary's.
Also, I have about 350 more horsepower, but he is over 10MPH faster.
However, without the cabin (and potty)..Mrs. HH probably would have told me to go boat myself...

As stated by others the reason the prices seem to be very reasonable on the 99-00's models are the steps. In 2000 they built some step bottom T/G's, but also some full cabin layups. The speed difference going from a non step to a step, power for power is roughly 10 mph increase (obvious differences for other weight options, etc...). They do not offer a full cabin in a step 38 because of the weight distribution. They do have the Covergirl Cabin which is a bed extention on the reg cabin. Mine has the CC cabin with a large built in cooler porta-potty section and couches. Mine is a 2002 and with the 575's under the right conditions will hit 90 mph. If you have any specific questions let me know and I will try to answer them.
(sorry I took so long to answer this. I just got back on from surgery last Wednesday)

Thanks for all the info. I think a 38 cig may be my next boat. I like the cover girl cabin, it seems simple enough without too much weight. I think a 38 is as big as a person would want to go for ocean/havasu and local lakes here in socal. I'll have to get one used so a 2000 and up hull has steps. Till then my 29 will have to do.

We have a 2001 T/S Gun with an extended Covergirl (extended version has a place to lay down / sleep), 500 EFI's and XR's. The boat has run 83 mph on gps and would probably see 85 with less weight in the boat. It is hands down the best boat we have owned. Reliable, fast in the rough and fun to drive.
As far as price, a new T/S 38' Gun with 525's was 414k when I priced one a few month ago. That is without a trailer.

Yes HC, That is what I ment to say. The extended cover girl cabin has the bed (which is what mine is) Don't you love those cig's! I have seen 89 on GPS with full loads. But you are right they are pricey. If you want to see an example of the Extended cover girl look in my photo section. I posted a few there.
