what holds a cam button in ? does it just float in the front of the locking plate or go behind it?

Wheather it's a solid or a bearing type, you put the button on the gear and then the plate, it will retain it!..

I assume this is a roller cam? Yes, a little play is normal. Are you using a stock type tin front cover or a fancy alum piece?

It's a good idea as it takes the side load off the chain, and yes, you need a few thousandths clearance between the button and the timing cover (otherwise it would "clearance" itself rather rapidly). Where are the instructions for the cam button, they should give teh required clearances.

The only time you need a button is if you run a roller cam, with flat tappets the lifter holds the cam back, notice that the factory don't put them in!..
