I was just wondering how some of the "pros", "BigBoys", and Gurus decide what deck height to use when building a BBC in the 454-540 cubic inch range? What goes into deciding the right deck height?

I'm none of the above but I use tall decks for my own stuff mainly so I can use a .400 long rods with a "shelf" piston pin location. And I have run them for years so I have mag bases adapted and blower manifolds. I think it would be safe to say that most guys use tall decks for stroker motors and low decks for stock stroke or slightly stroked motors. Lot of this is just personal preference.
Tall decks are heavier so there is a price to pay in weight. 540 can be done with a low deck no problem. Have one out there in a blown cruiser with a .250 long rod. Plenty of pistons available.

78,
I don't think you want a mid deck, they are a little pricey when it comes to the bolt ons!!!!
