Bulletin Boards in the last five years have become an amazing phenomenon. The first bulletin board appeared almost thirty years ago and, (as we see here) have evolved into a medium, previously unknown to man. Intended as a way for site administrators to share information, they have become MUCH more than just an adjacent technical warehouse.
Many of you can attest to the different aspects of this medium's evolution. Many of you have witnessed all it's incarnations? Like it or not, you are the epitome of what bulletin boards have become. The many links others provide have become your primary information source. The spammers have become your commercial interruption. The trolls have become your mortal enemies. The regulars have become your brothers, your friends, and your protagonist. Nick names and handles have become real people to some of you, (albeit untrue in the physical sense) they in fact, are real to you. In many cases handles have so affected the user, that the handle becomes the real person. Their literal life and ability to interact in the physical world are affected by their internet handle. They have, unknowingly, become their internet personas.
I am not writing this as an information thesis on the phenomenon. Nor am I inducing deflammatory responses from a "know-it-all" perspective. Real or imagined, this is, my take on the internet bb and it's parallels with the human condition.
I am very interested in your take on this bulletin board and how it has morphed into your reality, if at all? I would like to know if it has affected your judgement or time usage priorities?
A veritable plethora of you live on this board and are fiercely loyal to some personas, while others despise some personas, as much as a human can despise another. I want to hear your take on this? Your ideas? Anything you would care to share about your experiences including opinion, fact, hearsay or innuendo.
I will warn you this is research based and I am apt to quote some remarks. If so, the board name, and even the persona will remain anonymous.

Does it matter where I am from? This is legitimate curiosity over an intriguing communication source. Bulletin boards changed everything. Before this... there was nothing like it. This type of literal real time world wide communication never existed. It may be bigger than the pony express in the long run? You are at the threshhold of how people will learn. How people will meet. How they will plan their lives. Do not think this "mere" bulletin board phenomenon will not change the way things are done from now on. In China they have already enacted legislation to inhibit the freedom of thought bulletin boards encourage. Great writers will come of this. Charaterizations will be world famous. And here you are... at the beginning. That's worth something. Make good use of it. Actually, you are. Kudo's.

All bulletin boards are wary of outsiders. Without exception. Just as it is inevitable that you will fall in with a group in real life, it is true on any bulletin board. There is no proper or improper way to introduce oneself. The suspicion would be the same? The traditional "newbie" thread invokes no more trust than an "out there" thread like this one. We will either agree on the topic, or disagree. It is all so simple. Time builds trust. Nothing else.

All bulletin boards are wary of outsiders.
So admittedly...you have a tough row to hoe. I will add that it is even tougher to come into a community and attempt to strike up a conversation which really has very little to do with what brought the community together...
...such as coming on a boating forum to discuss the meduim for social interaction? :notam:
The question will inevitably be...what kind of boat do you have? Where do you boat?

Yes...time will tell.
What brings any community together is interaction. That interaction can be for safety, morality, commerce and a host of other things. What interests me is not why these communities came together. That's another story. I am interested in what they have become. And what they one day... will be? Every bulletin board has a personality. I do not want (nor expect) them to all be the same. Much like a town? Each is different, with it's own traditions and interests. The fact, not many has anything to say on the subject of this vehicle, speaks volumes. I am not insulted or dissuaded by the thread drift. That "drift" is the personality of this board. To an outsider it might seem as if it is just inane banter. To me it's a group of birds flocking together to defend themselves from a hunter. Or a mother bear leading a predator away from the cubs. I think it's fascinating. Of course...it could just be inane banter?
:D
Anthropology is seeking to understand and learn, that includes human lifestyle affected by the internet explosion of bulletin boards.. If it doesn't interest you then by all means... feel free to ignore. I am fine either way. It's just a subject. No need to get your panties in a wad about it.

I'd lean more toward the "inanane banter" ...but you're right about one thing- each board has it's own personality.
This board used to be very ruthless. The old software allowed posting under anonymity, which is a dangerous mix (as in real life). It's mellowed a little in it's old age (and software upgrades), but like real life, there is drama.
Human nature, I guess.
I will say that this board is closer than others I belong to. Many of us spend time in the real world together on a regular basis, and use this board just as much as communication tool as a social interaction medium.

Forgive me if I'm reading to far into your nonsensical jargon (oooo, Happy learned a big word!), but isn't your interest in "nicknames" one of the main reasons you started this thread?

I remember the days of 40 column screens and 300 baud modems. I tried hanging around a couple of BBS systems but found them to be a waste of time and didn't bother much with it until the FidoNet came around.
The difference with Fido based boards was that we could request files from the backbone and they would arive in two or three days, depending on how far they had to come. Back then, FidoNet boards were a co-op that would elect a local gateway system and the file requests would go to the gateway system which would forward them to the backbone, and then the files would return during the next communication cycle. Backbone communication only happened once a night because of the LD costs.
It was the early days of shareware and actually, the system worked pretty well.
That was back in the days of "Relay". We could use one of the computer labs at the University to chat real time with people around the world. There was horrible lag, of course. The system we had connected to that network was a PDP 11/70 and it had about a dozen DecWriter IIs connected. :D
WAIS, graphics, music... it all seemed 100 years away back then.
Now days, these groups are rich with media and people's personalities can really come through. They are so much more convenient and fun to use that I prefer ***boat entertainment to most garbage that comes on TV. It's cool to be able to help people out, get help, and occasionally meet interesting people from the forums.
Great post, Poster X.

My wife is like a girlfriend because we still enjoy dating and spending time together. What is it I am faking? My intitial post represented the fact of my research. It is true. My quest (as it were) is to discuss how bb's have become a part of your daily regimen and if it has (in fact) become a bigger part of your life than you realize. if so, how does that affect your real life? I would suspect people have become so involved that their personal lives have suffered to a degree? i hope I do not hear many stories to that effect? I would rather hear stories about how careers were affected for the better, and how life long friendships were created or couples met and became lifemates. I would be interested in humor. Expectations are going to precede a meeting. There must be some funny stories there? Say whatever you like. Or do not say anything at all? All actions tells a story and my interest is the same.

This suspiciously reminds me of a Seinfeld episode when Jerry and George act like they are gay and an article gets written about it in The New York Times...

Do you remember programing computers with punch cards?
Early 80's ;)
Punched cards were on the way out in the early 80s. DEC used to use paper tape (a long roll of paper with a bunch of punched holes in it).
In one of the CS classes I took, we had to write a bunch of device drivers for a PDP system that would read a card stack, write it out to paper tape, read the tape and then write the message to disk, then tape, and then print the message. It was pretty cool but some fuktard ran off with all the EOF cards and our card punch had broken down a couple of semesters before and they decided not to repair it.
Back in the early 80s, my brother was working in an IT shop where they had converted entirely to hard disk. Holy cow... that was impressive.

Tom Brown. I appreciate your feedback. Fidonet was before my time, but I have come across examples of it many times while researching this subject. Here is a link you might appreciate http://www.computerbits.com/archive/1996/0500/wire9605.html
An anthropologist in Los Angeles deduces that bulletin boards such as this one have convoluted and ruined the medium. It's articles such as his that create misconceptions about the medium. Just because it started as an information resource does not mean it has to stay there? If guys like that were in charge we would never had got the Jeep or the CB radio.

Not at Orange Coast College, we used punch cards to program our computer, it was a pain, because if you did ONE wrong, you had to start all over.....I remember feeding them in and waiting for them to come out.....
Do you remember the big "cake" like disks? I worked with some of those in the mid to late 80's :D

You could always tell who the geeks were at our high school. They were the ones walking around with a pile of IBM punch cards all rubber banded together...

Yeah. We had them at the University of Regina until about 1990 but they were pretty much gone from any computing center with a budget long before then.
The UofR used to get hand-me-down computers from industry so it was mostly pretty old stuff. They still do, but not exclusively.

I don't like the way you approached this subject. Why couldn't you just tell us who you are, settle in...then hit us with being lab rats???
Obviously the internet has proven an amazing avenue to meeting others. I've met physically met many of my friends via Yahoo Messenger. I've also discovered jobs thru Monster. None of this would have been possible in the past. Forums are just another way to meet others with the same interest. Yes, as time passes, you get to know them as friends and typically meet them at gatherings. Do I feel like I'm wasting my time here...No. These are not just usernames, these are real people. Some we'll never meet because they live too far away, but they are my friends nevertheless. Of course this trust is built overtime. We have been thru births, deaths, new cars, lost jobs, ...you name it. Not much different than than the same concern you would have with your fellow neighbors that live on your block. The only difference is we’re connected thru copper wire. In a sense, we are a community brought together by common interests. No, you don't have to own a boat...just appreciate the lifestyle. I moved here from Denver and quickly found there was nothing fun to do in this town....until I found the river. It changed my life. You know that feeling you get when you’re floating down the river, watching the sunset? Or going mach 10 with your hair flyin' everywhere, feeling the wind in your face and watching the amazing scenery around you? I call it my therapy.
I still don't like being a lab rat....I want to know what all this will be used for. I want to know who you are. I don't like strangers! It's kinda creepy!

I'm not likely to publish my name address and phone number on the internet. We aren't that civilized on the internet yet? Although you are suspicious please remember, I know none of you either? I have already met with blatant hostility that I feel was unprovoked? Such is life, I guess? I thought it was an intersting topic for an article. I have seen many articles on the subject but none approach it from the posters perspective. I want people to know the humanity behind the verbiage so casually summed up as... a bb. My wife thought it to be a grand idea to seek out a few popular forums and approach the subject. So I did. Of the three boards I approached, this one is by FAR the most untrusting and hostile? It was explained to me that someone has changed their nickname for the purpose of bashing you. That explains it. I feel it is more than just that, but I can accept the explanation.
As for me. I am a sometimes writer. I am what's called, a free lance journalist. Not necessarily a great one, but one none the less. I live in Texas and Louisiana and also have a family home in Mississippi. I spend a great deal of time in Scottsdale Az for reasons I cannot divulge in an open forum. I have partied extensively on lake Havasu and the Colorado River. I also go to Lake Mead on a semi regular basis. I have a 16 year old daughter who is driving me nuts. She's a Goth. I was a staff writer for The Atlantic Journal and Texas Monthly Magazines. I cut my teeth in the newspaper business at seventeen while working for the Clarendon Ledger in Jackson, Mississippi. I do "other things" to supplement my living and am a life long boater. Feel better?

AS a newbie myself, I would have to agree that it takes time to build up any trust and to be taken seriously as a poster, not a player. I've been onboard this forum for about a week, and have made a few connections in my local area (Pacific NW). They are glad to see another "***boater" hit the board, and, hopefully, hit the water this sumer. No one here knows me from Adam, yet they have responded to my ignorant (unknowing) questions with style and grace all there own, and some even gave real answers :hammerhea .
Hopefully, with time, I will find a recognizable place in the pack, and more importantly, be know on sight, and welcomed, on the water. The boat is the extention of the self, much like a car. To some it's transportation, a way to the means, to others it's an open canvas to express themselves on, to others (me  ) it's a method to feed the madness. My boat's not a show stopper, and will never be a drag boat, but it's fast enough to get the adrenaline shot that I can't get in the world of "proper behavior".
"X", if that is your real name, you could get a similar response by walking into the local Starbuck's and just sitting down a a table and trying to join the conversation. Most people are naturally apprehensive with strangers, it's in our genetics, much like beating the undesirables with sticks until they leave :hammer2: . Any good research takes time to get to the true facts, so, sit back, warm up your fingers and, if you're feeling lucky, take a step into the "Benchracer" forum. Iv'e lurked, but I'm not sticking my neck out there just yet.

Kudo's.

Oh, I get it. I understand quite succinctly that this board is a meeting board and not an anonymous flame board. If I came on any differently I would be a fraud. I may meet some of you one day but that is not my intent. Even if i'm on the river, the liklihood of me taking my boat to the sand bar, are miniscule at best. I am interested in issues. Mostly issues regarding the internet and it's anthropological impressions on society. This style of posting that is represented by the majority of you on my thread are consistent with every other thread I have read on the first page. They all read the same. At least... to me. There is nothing wrong with it, and it seems to work well for you. I just have no desire to pretend I am one way when I am really another. If I posted the cute one-liners and asked around for hook-ups only then would I be a fraud. Asking if I was god is rather insulting. My family believes in god. I would not shove my beliefs down your throat but I would appreciate if you respected them enough not to use god as a metaphor for me being some kind of troll? If wanted to be a troll I would not have maintained my composure in the face of such harsh words early on. This, is a conversation in my eyes. Nothing more.

You mis-read again... One thing I have learned is that the newbies are going to be harrased to see how they take it. It's like any other Clique, if you don't fit with the group, your out. I'm not one who will change to be accepted, adn I don't expect others to either. If you have any kind of pyschology background at all you should understand that part of the human (and animal) mind. Anyone new will be tested, and placed in the hierachy accordingly, or the more simple "Lead, Follow, or get the H--- out of the way!!"
People look for others who have similar ideologies, a common thread. Here it's boats, others groups may be drinking (okay, so that's here too), or sports. You said this in one of your other long winded disertations.
To close my point, if you were really looking to quantify the collective thought of the forum, you have failed miserably. Go home and try the Singer sewing machine forum. It should be more your speed.

Not true. Every reply is helpful. I'm not naive. Every response I have received on this thread was expected. Surely you have at least noticed, I am no novice? You would be hard pressed to find any post where I have presumed I am more intelligent than anyone else? My origins are on industry boards that can be extremely verbose. As a result... my style is reflective of that experience.
How you have helped?
Originally the focus of the article was going to be about the communtities themselves and what those communities mean to the members. I have now realized it is much more interesting to focus the article on the characters that invariably dictate the flow on a given board. What to expect when you visit a board the first time? If you post as I have then expectations can be one way. If you post meekly and with shallow content, then they will be quite another. Each neighborhood (community) has the bully, the heretic, the zealot and so on. You actually have been very helpful. This is why I ran it by you in the first place. ;)

On my board this entrance would be the norm? We are all victims of assimilation to one degree or the other. What is interesting is the phenomenon itself. Each board (as i said earlier) has it's own personality. The onus is on you (the regulars) to make a new person feel welcomed. The liklihood I would post in your style is virtually nil when you factor in I have been on bulletin boards for years. Only someone with no experience whatsoever, would post initially as you want them to. With that in mind... I wonder how many excellent people you may have inadvertantly ran off? I wonder do you care?

I do not agree with this board being consistant!, I have pissed more than one person off on here, while another finds what I have said amusing, so right there shows a lack of consistancy amongst members. With a board that has over 7000 members it is impossible to generalize this group.

Hoolign, Your board is consistent for the very reasons you say it isn't. It's not an insult. It's a generalization. The bad boys identified themselves early on. The conspicay theorists identified themselves early on. Every board has them. This is NOT unique. Just as you have moderate personalities, you have volatile personalities. Generalizations exist based on consistent facts. That is not an insult. It's how it is.

OK, I'm willing to take PosterX at face value.
I am very interested in your take on this bulletin board and how it has morphed into your reality, if at all?
My take on this BB? To me, it's like TV only contoured to my interests. We have informative threads, entertaining threads, drama threads and threads where we arrange get togethers. Not to mention a plethora of other threads that I am missing. It has become part of my reality as I personally know several people from the boards and made a few friends along the way.
I would like to know if it has affected your judgement or time usage priorities?
Affected my judgment? Perhaps on boating matters, as I have learned much from others on the boards. But I doubt that is what you were inquiring about, I don't believe it has affected my judgement in my personal life. As far as my time usage priorities, well, that was never a strong point for me. My bills stay paid, I do my job at work and I still interact with my family. Instead of playing video games or watching TV or playing with my RC cars (or whatever else I did with my spare time), I'm here interacting with others.
A veritable plethora of you live on this board and are fiercely loyal to some personas, while others despise some personas, as much as a human can despise another. I want to hear your take on this? Your ideas?
Gee, like you said many of us live here. We have devoloped real friendships with these people, therefore we have loyalties to them as much as friends we have met in the "traditional" manner. As for despising some of the online personas, well hang around for awhile and you will surely find some folks that just rub you the wrong way regardless of how accomidating or meek you are. Some people just don't mix well. Maybe my take on this is a little too simple, or perhaps you are overthinking it.
Any other questions? Feel free to ask me here or via PM.

Thanks Kachina and you could be right? I am a bit analytical and tend to dissect things into their purest form. I blame technical writing in college. :boxed:
The reason I asked how this board affects your interaction in real life, is because I found an example of an individual who so bought into his persona on-line to such a degree, that he began to act differently in real life. So much so, that he eventually lost everything and even ended up in prison. Now, that is the extreme of the spectrum and I understand not many people would let it get to that point. However, I am sure there are some peeps out there who have been affected in a slightly less menacing way? There are just too many people participating on bulletin boards for it to be untrue? It's hypothetical at this point and there is no data to support it, but I feel there is a viable connection between the existential persona and the person.

I could see that in someone who in "the real world" was without friends, respect and social interation. The boards are a place that, if you want you can create any personality you want. I didn't create a different me when I came to the boards. Most of what I post is really me, no tough guy stuff, just a little sarcasm and a few quippy remarks. Anyone who knows me, knows this is how I really am.

The onus is on you (the regulars) to make a new person feel welcomed.
You claim to be new to our board and you're telling us the roll we must play? Are you sure you're not arrogant?
Generalizations exist based on consistent facts.
It would seem you have judged us. Enjoy your stay.

I'm gonna Play here Poster X....Mike37... he is speaking queen's english(not really but..) because he wants to passively set himself apart from us...(except HH, he knows alot of big words, but that goes with his tall man's complex) I spell and punctuate ghetto style  cause I'm ok with my height :)
He (poster x) is looking for the reaction within, maybe even a rally from the HB calvary to prove some of his theories. It's actually kinda interesting read to this point.... and "for the record" (you hear that alot here) I would bet$ you have an alias on this board
My name is Charley I have a lovely wife and 2 kids and we are between boats right now....Ultimately they are the most important things in my life, and if these boards ever put them in physical Danger I would feel great regret. My handle is well "Charley" ... I did that on purpose for 2 reasons. #1 I, personally am bad with names, and wish everyone would just be thier own name.... 1 name to recall on the beach is better than trying to associate 2  #2 I see alot of hiding behind fake names on BB's.... It's a little chickenshit IMHO, Make a new name, talk some shit, no real accountability... I kinda hate that. (I sign my reps too, we all should)
Ya, I'd consider myself a shit talker, but 99% of the time it's just pissing match between two 14 yr old boys who are really grown men going on 30 something, each with an opinion that wont waiver. I typically engage in an "online testosterone brawl" with the same people, and more than 95% of the time it's not a brawl at all, it's just some friends poking fun at each other. I realize the shit talking I do may give some people the wrong idea about me. It's almost always a joke and it's hard to get context sometimes via text but I also know... I'm a Jester with a heart and ultimately I like being me :D
The other side to these boards for me is the real people behind the names. I have met maybe 40-50 people from here, and as a whole they are a real good bunch! I would say my very closest real life friends were not a result of these boards, but there are a few I do feel close too. I honestly feel there is a clan that exists here that makes all of us feel more secure that we are part of it. I fall in and out of love with BB's, and at times it can be frustrating and I leave but I have always come back. Poster X, go ahead and write what you will... there are positives and negatives to this BB's phenomenon and you have your right to portray it as you want, I just hope you aren't some tree hugging leftist liberal a$$hole...... If so I hope I offend you :p
