We're always looking to try new places besides Martinez and Parker. Any suggestions?

We only go to Crazyhorse out on the Island in Havasu.
Can't beat it, the point and vip are great and they come with boat slips to boot.

Parker is ours too. Buckskin is fantastic especially for our kids (playground and gameroom). I haven't been up to Nacimiento or Lake San Antonio. I've only heard great things about them both. Are there any specific ***boater campgrounds to stick to and to avoid? I would love to take a trip up there this coming summer when it's just to hot to be at the river.

Ain't it the absolute truth. Powell is a once every 3-5 year trip as it's an 15-18 hour drive for us (San Diego). :frown:

Millerton during the early part of summer is great for us, not too hot yet waters is still warming up, and the crowds have not started yet, the Rangers can be a pain, but you get to know what they want and you just go with the program. MikeVG

Parker is my favorite by far!!! Second is McYntire (?sp) park in Blythe. Have to be in a jet boat down there, but what is fun to do is to load up about 15 rafts and 5 coolers full of adult beverages, have the boat tow everyone up river about 10 miles and float down. By the time you get back to camp everyone is feeling good and the float was fun. The only problem is that there is no social life other than what you bring.

pudingstone of corse!...way too much history there for it not to be!
and its only 10 min. from home, the wife and i take the boat out on weekdays at dusk and grab a bucket-o-chicken and have ourselves a good time,...uh, until the ranger comes and kicks us off @7:00pm!
just playin', but i would have to say that Big River is the best place for us!

Did I mention Montana, Holter lake is awsome if you want to actually camp, as in load the boat with gear, go up the lake a ways and pitch your tent on the shore. We only got about 800,000 people in the whole state. and they don't all go camping or boating at the same time. I've seen pictures of the sandbar and I looks like there are more people around that little patch of Cilica than we have within a thousand miles of here. Plus we got fish in our water

Will do! We got a 10 car site for Oct... we ran out of room w/ trailers and wouldn't be able to fit them all on the 6 car sites along w/ the boat trailers and other trucks...
If we do I'll definitely let you know! The more the merrier!

you guys got BEARS up their? :jawdrop:
Interesting question. Last year we had a couple of Grizzly experts from California here last year in Glacier Park and they made a really good snack for the local bruins. This guy had stated that he understood the bears and they were not really dangerous if you could get inside the bears head. He and his girlfriend got inside the bear all right!!
Truly, there are bears in some parts of the state, but smart camping practices prevent problems. Put food away after preperation. Don't approach bears. don't approach dead dear or elk in the woods. (Bear fast food resturant) while hiking in bear areas, make noise so you don't suprise bear. In fall while picking berries, scope area first to see if bears are present, if so let bears have berries. DONT PET THE BEARS ;)

Millerton is about 20 miles north of Fresno, and yes, it's best early in the year (until 7/1) when the temp is under 100* and the lake is full. After that, Shaver Lake, about an hour up the hill (5,000 ft) is the place to get out of the heat (avg temp 85*) and into the pine trees. I've spent alot of time at both because they're so close to home. Personally, for camping I also like Don Pedro (45 miles east of Modesto), Shasta, and the Delta.

For pure camping and boating, Shaver/Camp Edison is tops on my list. All around river fun would be Mcintyre....been doing that place since the late 70's....

Thanks Sanger Pete, i was going to answer the Millerton question, glad you took care of it.
Thinking of heading up that way next May or June for a week, have to give you a call, maybe get you over there for some meet and greet stuff oh yeah and some boating too!!
My wife and three girls have never been there so it will be a real treat for them, i see Fresno has gotten huge compared to when i was last up that way.... WOW!!!

For Camping, Squaw Lake on the Lower River, they have nice Bathrooms and Showers, it's on a No Wake Zone so you don't get a lot of rif raf running around, and you can sleep five feet from your boat...

Right on! I vote for a kidless week though :D It's few and far between but then there are miracles once in awhile! Did I see the OP6 correctly and you guys will be attending? I've heard legends about OP6, but will have to taste for myself :D (Yup...stealing my own thread)

I have never been, but like you... heard all about it :D We were suppose to go last year, but it was the weekend right after our Moabi trip and... well we spent enough money on that trip so we thought it would be best to save it :D So this year I am hoping to go and hang out w/ everyone... I haven't talked to the hubby yet, but I think if we have our trailer out there anyways... if it is at Parker that is... we'd be up for it. You guys planning on going? I know it will be a killer time!!!

I think we will be going. It only took me 5 years to get my wife interested in boating! So now that she is...she can't get enough of it! Where do you guys stay in Parker? Our favorite is still Buckskin. Especially for the kids.

Stayed in a few different places... camped there a long time ago, but now we have a trailer we want to park out there so considering a few different places. I grew up staying at River Shore Resort but haven't been back there since I "grew up" :D but hope to one day... Stayed at Echo Lodge which is a blast, but hard to get a spot for a trailer/motorhome sometimes... just have to make reservations far ahead I guess..., stayed at different friends houses, and now hope to have one of our one someday... but for now I think we are thinking about parking the trailer at the campground next to Roadrunner... that way we don't even have to drive anywhere after we drink :D No DD for that :D Still enjoy crazy horse for some crazy memories though. But Moabi is the overall favorite... you can cram a ton of your friends on the one campsite and kick it right on the water. Kids, dogs, everyone :D

Shaver Lake.
It's part of a three lake chain located east of Modesto that includes Horshoe and some other lake run by Edison. Beautiful campgrounds, impeccably clean rest rooms/showers. Shaver is small, some shallow areas but awsome scenery/trees and all that goes with a mountain lake.
I am telling you, Edison should teach everyone else (state, county, whatever) how to run and maintain a campground. Interesting history and Edison tour. They generate power with turbines in tubes that run through tunnels through the mountain. At night, they use the excess power on the grids to run the geneartors backwards, pumping the water back up to the higher lakes.
They also have horseback riding at Horshoe lake.
