I am contemplating putting a supercharger in my boat. It is a 6.2 merc.
looking at Whipple, a place here called Boat Plex in phx. gave me an estimate of 7500, installed, with an oil cooler.
comments???
suggestions???

Nothing really negaitive about the Boat Plex, but I'd at least spend 15 minutes and call Larry at Larry's Speed & Marine in Tucson (520.623.5373) and tell what you're thinking about. It'll be a good second opinion and worth your time.

HEY UPSMAN THE WIPPEL SYSTEM FOR THAT MOTOR IS VERY GOOD ONE ,I HAVE THAT SAME MOTOR BUT I DID ALOT OF WORK TO THE ENTIRE PAKAGE, LIKE H BEAM RODS NITRATED CRANK ,JE PISTONS, NEW ENCOLN VALVES,ETC ETC, THE MOTOR RUNS VERY HARD, AND MAKES ABOUT 515HP ,575TQ, I RUN 9 PSI BOOST, IN A PARTY CAT, GOOD CHOICE, GOOD LUCK. HAPPY BOATING :)

I agree.
Ditto.
I'm such a cheerleader.
Like Craig said, not knocking Boat Plex, but Larry IMO is the #1 hot rod marine guy in the state. Your stuff goes to Larry, it comes back right. No drama. He's also extremely helpful to most anyone who calls. He has a big following 'round these parts. Chances are Craig rattled that phone number off the top of his head. I know it's burned into my little brain! :D

Come on all the overtime your getting right now. Just go buy a racing engine :D
j/k. Good luck with the whipple. Everybody that has em seems to love em. I just don't want to have to rebuild my engine after a few hundred hours.

I was told you had to rebuild every 600 standard, with a supercharger it is more like every 450.

I think your at 600 with a racing engine. With a standard package then as long as you do proper maintenance then it should virtually run forever. Or at least a really long time. Even the maintenance isn't cheap though. I just dropped 360 bucks to get my 30 hour service done.
Maybe I need to go driving like you. ;)

$hit. 100 bucks sucks but I'd pay 600 bucks before I blow up my engine and have to pay 20 grand for a new one. I take care of the engine but when it's time to drop the hammer.......... Hold on to your nipples.

Is $7500 a reasonable price for a whipple? That seems like an outragoues sum of money to superchage a small block. Sh*t you can buy a procharger for $1700 and bolt it on yourself in about 4 hours.

Whipple over Procharger, I have two words:
"Engineered Package"
See what Vortech offers, those guys make sure it is right before they put it out (and it doesn't look like e prototype (like PC). They think about ignition, computer, etc.

So we're talking new ECU, bigger injectors, etc. with the whipple?
Personally if it were me I'd fabricate my own twin turbo system for the thing. But that's just me.

The Whipple is a Very Nice clean system.
Well engineered and integrated into the engine electronics.
$7,500 as a complete "Turn-Key" price is very reasonable!

What kind of HP is seen from the 6.2 with a whipple at minimal boost.
My dad is interested in the whipple or procharger system for his 350 Mag and I would imagine it is about the same as the 6.2 in terms of HP right? Maybe? :(

The Merc 377 6.2 MPI is rated for 320 HP from Mercury.
Blown Lightly you should see 400HP.
Blown Moderatly 440HP
Blown Hard 500HP
Longevity on that motor would be a major concern with raised boost pressures though...

Whipple is saying 500 hp at 6 to 7 pounds of boost. $7500 is what I was told by someone else in Havasu, and about $8200 by AZ speed and Marine, will try the guy in Tucson tomorrow, but most likely going with Bernie in LHC, seemed most knowledgeable and competent.

Call Aaron at Absolute Speed and Marine in LHC. That guy knows his stuff and and is very honest. I don't know if he is a dealer for them or not though but he will give you an honest opinion. When I was getting my boat serviced then I saw all kinds of paul pfaff and chevy racing engines in his shop. This guy when I had a question for him could have gotten a couple hundred bucks out of me but told me honestly that I didn't need the part and that it was expensive if he did it. When I asked if I could do it myself he started telling me step by step what to do. I took his advice and saved myself the time and money.
