Best way to get the straight scoop is to call Dale Lambert he and Kelly built the 501 mold when Dale was at Kurtis .

If Iam not mistaken, the 501 has narrrower front sponsons and cockpit. Without a capsule it had a windshield. The 500 has more of a straight gunnell (dash) at the steering column. The 500 was built for BGH and the 501 was usually used in normally aspirated set-ups, hince the more narrow cockpit and front sponsons.

501 has the pointy windshield. Mine's the black one, the purple one behind me is a 500.

My understanding is the 501 was wider on the sponson contact areas. My 500 had a small area on the right sponson extended out to make for a wider stance. I was told that it had the same surface contact area as the 501..??.. Of course the dashes are different too, but anything else I'm not aware of. I've never looked into it before, so I'll be checking back for some good info.

this came from joe shelfo pe 623.
This is my knowedge on the kurtis kraft.
the 500 has a completely different sponson and sponson location than the 501. I am refering to the small kurtis. The 500 is an earlier design, that has a slightly bit less depth than the 501. The width location is also narrower than the 501. The approach(angle) is also a little different, meaning the 501 is steeper. The decks on these boats are different from each other. The 501 has a cool windsheild, and the 500 has a kicked up ramp deck. Both of these boats had the narrow tail. The newer GSM/Grimes 502 has the wider , filled in tail with a wider blast plate. I have put the wider tail on the earlier boats, and it does help the boat leave a tiny bit flatter. The Kurtis, MPH, and the Bitz 501 are all modified splashes off of the old Kindsvater shovel nose. I do know this, they are all good boats, for racing only. With the right weight locations, prop depth and angle, rudder offset, and of course the right RB prop, you can make any hydro work. They only ride on two plates up front, and the prop or props and rudder. They have not changed that much in the last 35 years.

Is this the boat that started it all?

That boat just looks spooky to me. Alot of motor outboard steering with cables and the floors look to be well stressed :squiggle: :notam:

I don't know all the specs on the 500 compared too the 501 but I have driven both with similar power and there is no comparison the 501 is light years ahead of the 500.
