...So I decided to take the girlfriend out for a little drive today. We left rainy Temecula to head up the dirt road to Mt. Palomar, It wasn't long before we were on a very slippery dirt road. The clay soil in this area gets really slick after a little rain.
She had only been off road once about 15 years ago. I tried to calm her and tell her I've driven this road many times. She would get very nervouse as we would climb some slippery hills with the truck almost sideways (this is normal I said).
Long story short... we had to turn around at a locked gate, but were able to see plenty of snow, all within 30 minutes from home...
Some pics... BTW that old Toyota has over 340,000 miles, and the Duramax emblem is a joke.

I used to have an 85 Toyota 4x4. Those trucks are bullet proof. No power but with that thing in 4x4 low it would climb a wall. Looks like fun.

I'm in as long as it's not rock crawling or anything gnarley. I am building a bronco for that, and I need to be nice to my toyota.....

Can't believe that's 30 min from our houses. You'll have to clue me in on that road Scotty. So, did you get a chance to pull the "...Oh no, I think I ran out of gas." move on her???

Now this sounds like a good idea. I would be game for this. I know some trails up in Big Bear that are pretty cool but there may be too much snow on them right now plus that is a pretty long drive for just a day trip.

Hey Neighbor, That road is out on 79 So. just past Vail lake campground. The road is called Palomar Divide, or 3N-Something. It would be hard to find if you hadn't been there before. I used to go up there to unload ammo into targets, but Sunday I noticed many new signs saying NO SHOOTING.
I couldn't run out of gas, there was a 5 yr old in the back seat. But it was mentioned to me that it would be FUN to drive up there just the 2 of us. :D
This is the Best Map (http://www.treknow.com/california/backroads/south_coast/palomar_divide.htm) I could find. The road is a mile or 2 past Aguanga on the right side. Turn right into the Rancho California RV Park, follow the entrance to the RV park about 1/2 mile till the road turns right, if you go straight you will be at the west end of the road. There is a small waterfall to the left of the begining of the road (better in the Spring) just look for the graffiti.

Roz, It was nice to finally meet you also. That was a pretty nice party Sat. night. Great food and good people...
She wasn't prepared for the snow, because I just said "hey let's go for a drive" and only threw some jackets boots and a tow strap in the truck. Next time I will be more prepared. Usually the snow doesn't get that deep up there it's only 3,000' to 4,000' elevation.

OK, yeah I drove my F350 up that road about 5 miles or so. I had to do a couple of 3-point turns to make some of those sharp corners. A couple of guys where hauln' a$$ on their dirt bikes in the opposite direction. You should have seen the look on their faces when they took a blind corner and were staring at my bumper. :2purples: Priceless...
