I fail to see the problem here. If he'd kept the door closed he'd have missed the game and also inundated the home with a hard wave of sudden sewer gas. This way the gas is disbursed evenly over time and makes much more sense. Had she not walked in from outside she'd probably have hardly noticed the progression from flowery to manurey.
