almost have the boat ready so i start putting on the headers i bought from someone last year at weavers swap meet thinking i got a good deal on a used set of pipes from the guy well 2 of the holes are so close to the pipe i can not get nuts on unless i dent the hell out of the pipes, then i just set the pipes in place and one is farther out the back of the boat but they both measure the same length from end to end is this right? also what can i do to get the nuts to clear the pipes with out denting in the pipes?

The reason one is longer than the other is your #1 cylinder is more forward on the block they are all like that. Get use to it!

i am going to pull the pipe off and try it with a header bolt on one side. on the othe side it is so close with the bend a bolt will not go in the hole. that is why a tried studs hoping i could clear it with a jam nut. they are not doubled walled and there is no name plate on them.

Pat, use the ARP header studs and nuts. They use a reduced head on the nut. Had to do the same with mine. And, yes, if the headers are the same length, the ends will be staggered. My Bassett shorties are that way, too.
Here's a pic of the ARP studs/nuts.

Any decent speed shop should have them. I think mine came from Vic Hubbard. Otherwise, Jegs or Summit.
Another alternative I used recently was a set of stainless allen head bolts. The smaller head diameter on those worked out well, too.

Try the studs and you can always slot the hole to get a header bolt in.
I can hear the guy that sold those to you laughing from here. :jawdrop:
When you get them on he will be able to here you laughing. :D Because he probably tried them and gave up. He did not have friends on Hot Boat Forums.

When you go to put the headers on, place the nut over the hole and hold it there with your finger. As the stud just comes through the hole, start turning the nut, and keep threading it on as the stud comes through the hole. This way you won't be fighting the stud sticking all the way through the hole trying to get the nut on. You might need someone to help steady the headers. :D

use an allen bolt, size the head size with a grinder, slightly flat spot the tube with a crecent wrench wrapped with tape and a hammer. A shorter bolt can be achieved by threading a nut on and grinding threads off the end, then rounding the end for starter threads. Then "chase" the threads when removing the nut. Has anybody cut and welded "special wrenches" for those hard to reach spaces?

I see your running the water into the block first. What do the other v-drive guy's say about that. I put mine into the oil cooler first and then the headers and the block last. (Only my two pennies)
