View Full Version : DCB w/ Twins OB's

I have been doing alot of searching on the boards on DCB and Ultra trying to find anything and everything to help me make a decision.
I'd like to hear anyone's opinion/experience with 26' DCB with twin Merc 2.5s or 300X's. Perfermance (Top speed, acceleration, ride, etc) and what kind of insurance rates one can expect with a 26' cat with twin outboards?
I'll be out in San Diego in Jan and plan on visiting DCB and Ultra, but I'd like to here from any of the "customers" who either own one with the outboards, or have riden in one. I'm deciding between the Ultra 27 Shadow and 26' DCB and of course OB's versus I/O. All but 1 boat I have owned have been OB's so it's just another decision on top of what manufacturer. The 27 Shadow would probably be powered by the MV-10 Viper engine and the DCB likely twin 300X's. I'm more interested in acceleration vs top end.
Any comments on the performance and insurance would be much appreciated.

That is a big differnce to compare too. outboard =better gas mileage turn key
V10= i would image raw acceleration

You are right....big difference to compare. I have enough info on the Shadow to know what to expect. Don't have much on the DCB with twins. The comparison really stops at the boats themselves minus the engines. I would go OB's with DCB and the Viper on the Shadow. Different engine configurations...yes I know, but there are different aspects I like about each boat. Just wanted to hear peoples thoughts on the DCB with twins.
Tough decision :)

PM HavasuCig as he used to have a DCB 26 with twin 300's I think. He also had a DCB 26 with a I/O blown Blossdale motor, I think ???, so he can give you a comparison between the OB's and the I/O.

this is chris and Jodies(havasucig) last DCB. 2000 MACH26 with twin 2.5's at 66K its a SCREAMING deal! I've seen many pic's of about every inch of the boat...its clean. I wish the timing for me was different, id soooo be an owner on it right now. And its closer to you back there than us out here. Its in GA. Talk to "Todd" the broker who is selling it, he a very cool guy...tell him Toby send you :) This would cost you 120K'ish new.......

I think the DCB would have a bigger top end somewhere around 107. If I am correct the shadow will run 90. It is a large big boat and has a big underneath deck.
The DCB is sleek , They should both run well in the ruff water.
I think the DCB will cost you alot more
HHHMMMM......DCB cat with twins running 107 huh? Funny, my boy is getting a new cat, he said it would run the same speed. Is that published somewhere??? Funny how you too came up with the SAME IDENTICAL number? :D

sorry but....NO WAY! 60K more for a MACH26 over a 27 shadow....NO WAY. Trust me, I DO KNOW what a MACH 26 goes for in every configeration available....I've been beating those poor guys up for the last yr for one. John makes a BEAUTIFUL boat...but its not that much less money.

Thanks guys for all the comments. Really appreciate everyone's input. As Tobtek has suggested I have posted this over in Cats/Tunnels as well.
Just makes the decision that much more difficult :)

107 is very real. I was in a 03 F26 with X's at Elsinore when making the video for the 03 boat show. We hit 109mph, and it was SCARY smooth! 70-80-90 was NOTHING!

Have had both boats....02 Mach 26 with I/O with Whipple 502....probably around the same hp as the the Illmore V10 is going to put out...Now we have an 04 with with twin 300x's.
If I had to do it again, it would be outboards...just more turn key, and no worrying about drives...with a closed bow built light, the ob is going to do 110-112.....That V10 will be lucky to hit 90-95....A more true comparison is the Teague 800..and the 800 will have it by a couple MPH...
As for ride the outboard has a much lighter feel and rides with less boat in the water...
If you have specific questions shoot me a PM...
I have never ridden in the Ultra, but the DCB 26 is going to be a faster hull power for power and before you listen to anyone's pricing advice, go and talk to them and try comparing apples to apples...Dave is not going to be that far off....For example, if you are pricing the Ultra with 600hp, price the DCB with 600hp...The Out boards are a little more expensive, but again they are going to be in the same pricing range as the 800hp package...
Hope that helps.
Also, if you are looking for a killer deal on an F26, look in the boattraderonline.com at the yellow one...110mph F with 300x's for less than 90K....awesome deal.

Does anybody have an idea what a Teague 800 is rated at the prop. I don't think they are rated like Mercury engines which I know are rated at the prop.

I meant 3K-4K a year...and yes that is a lot....maybe it might be cheaper since the boat is only in the mid sixties price range, but if was new it would be around 4.5K or 5K...
Maybe for a mid sixties boat it would be around 2500 or 3000...but since it goes over a hundred, it won't be much less.

I have to agree with MR. Brown
On a new one you are looking at 4.9K a year, so I heard

I have been doing alot of searching on the boards on DCB and Ultra trying to find anything and everything to help me make a decision.
I'd like to hear anyone's opinion/experience with 26' DCB with twin Merc 2.5s or 300X's.
IT WOULD BE SICK.
The 27 Shadow would probably be powered by the MV-10 Viper engine
the Ilmor motor is a COMPLETE WASTE of money. Besides being able to tell your friends you have a viper motor in your boat there isn't much use in putting one of those in your boat. Save yourself 15K and put in a Merc %
525 and go faster with a better warranty (this coming from a guy who HATES them) or save yourself 20K and put in a Larry Peto 580 @ 675 HP for the low price of 25K. Dont be too quick to spend money without doing the homework, it's a trap a lot of guys fall into.My 2 cents......

I agree with Kachina Ken....I would not spend the markup on the Illmor or the Blue Merc Motor....I would actually lean towards Peto just cause his prices seem much more reasonable then the So Cal Pixie Dust builders...and Charlie's old boat seemed to run just fine with them along with the AZ Daytona owners that run really fast with them....Also, there is that Predator boat that runs SORT of FAST with them. :) :) :)

I have spent quite a bit of time in that yellow 26 DCB and it is flawless. It will run mid to high 90s with four people in the middle of summer. If you are actually shopping for a boat, look at it. No, its not mine. I grew up with the owner. Wish it was mine, though.
