My dad has an 04 chevy duramax. Latelely the truck will load up at around 70 on the freeway. It will spit black smoke for a few seconds then clear up. Any idea what could cause this. So far the only thing done to the truck is oil changes and it has no more then 25000 miles

Mine was doing something similar, also would idle very rough at times. Found out it was a stuck injector. Local dealer had it fixed in one day.
Good Luck.

Change your fuel filter.
At least check it. :D

How often should the fuel filter be changed? More often then a gas truck?

Manual calls for every 10,000 miles.

My '04 did the same thing. It turned out to be the injectors. I took it to the dealer and they said that they had 15 other trucks that were doing the same thing. Had my fixed in 3 days. It runs fine now.

Ive herd there was some kind of re-call on the fuel injectors at around 80-100,000 miles. I dont know though thats what I was told when I was looking at buying a used one.

Some of the older ones have been recalled for bad injectors, I think Chevy stepped up and extended the injector warranty to 200,000 miles.
