Vehicles shot at with unknown weapons
Police target freeway vandals
By SUE DOYLE, STAFF WRITER
RANCHO CUCAMONGA - As many as 45 vehicles have had their rear and side windows shot out on local freeways in the past few days, and the California Highway Patrol is asking for help to prevent any more incidents.
No one has been hurt in the vandalism, which began Dec. 19 in an L-shaped area between the 10 Freeway at Euclid Avenue in Upland and the 15 Freeway at Route 138 north of Cajon Pass.
However, since children are more likely to sit in back seats, authorities are especially concerned for their safety.
"Sooner or later, someone will be hurt," CHP Sgt. Oscar Medellin said. "That's what we want to prevent."
The car windows are being shattered with pellet guns or other devices that launch projectiles. Officials couldn't say with certainty if firearms are being used.
Investigators would not say if they had recovered any of the projectiles.
Officials do not know if the shooters are standing above or alongside the freeway or if they are shooting from other cars.
The CHP has set up a special task force to investigate the vandalism and has additional officers patrolling the freeways. CHP also plans to use helicopters and airplanes to monitor the roads.
Authorities are asking drivers to be vigilant on the 10 and 15 freeways and to call 911 if they see anything out of the ordinary.
Investigators suspect there may be other incidents that have not been reported. Some drivers may have believed that their windows broke because of rocks on the freeway, Medellin said.
Anyone with information is asked to call the CHP Inland Communications Center at (909) 388-8000.
Sue Doyle can be reached by e-mail at sue.doyle@dailybulletin.com or by phone at (909) 483-9347.

Maybe the CHP detectives need to get off the forums and solve a crime!
