WOW!!! Have you guys seen this!!!
They say you will only see one of these in a lifetime!!!
Rescuers piled up bodies along coastlines hit by tsunamis that obliterated seaside towns in Asia and Africa and killed at least 23,700 people in 10 countries, according to a United Nations estimate released Monday.
Hundreds of children were buried in mass graves in India, and morgues and hospitals struggled to cope with the catastrophe. Somalia, some 3,000 miles away from the earthquake that sent tsunamis raging across the Indian Ocean, reported hundreds of deaths.

Cool photo Forensic!
To think all those peeps that were vacationing for Christmas. They didn't even know it was coming! The footage showed all those bodies floating in the ocean like rag dolls. I'm still in awe. :(

To make matters worse, the rebels on Sri lanka ( I think) had thousands of land mines buried that were unearthed by the water, and are now a threat to rescue workers trying to get into the area, and survivors trying to get out..........MP

One video I saw, people were playing on the beach as the waves got bigger  they had no idea what was happening, they thought the water was just rising. Then the big ones came in while they were standing there

Forensic, your right, the speed of the waves was 500 mph....the same speed as an airplane.
It happened around 8:00 a.m....people were on the beach and and tourists were drinking their morning coffee in the hotels. The beach had subsided over 100 yards for aprox 20 minutes....and then it hit. No one even knew it was coming. No warning whatsoever.
quote:
“The tsunamis came without warning. Witnesses said sea waters at first retreated far out into the ocean, only to return at a vicious pace. Some regions reported a crashing wall of water 30 feet high.
The water went back, back, back, so far away, and everyone wondered what it was — a full moon or what? Then we saw the wave come, and we ran,” said Katri Seppanen, who was in Thailand, on Phuket island’s popular Patong beach."

sorry if this seems insensetive, but I have always wanted to watch something like this from a plane, hopefully in an area where no lives would be in danger, I bet it's an awsome sight to see a wave get that big.
Does anyone know where I can view the footage of this?

Very, very sad, those peoples lifes will never be the same. My boss was going to go back there for Christmas to see his family, but decided not to and he is glad cause he was going to vacation at one of those funny named islands that got hit hard.
His family is all ok though, they were far enough inland.

The devistation is horrible. I was over in Thailand in September and was scheduled to go back at the beginning of the year. Thankfully plans changed and I don't have to go. My partner is taking my place. I was looking at pictures and could actually see some of the places I was in September. Now they are in ruins. I talked to some people over there, and some people that I had met are no longer with us. Really sad. No warning what so ever. Just proves that no matter how strong we thing we are, Mother nature still has the upper hand. :( :clover: :chi:

With how bad it is over there, I found this story on Yahoo to be amazing. Our son is 2 years old also.

Riverkitty, although these tidal waves are capable of those speeds on the open ocean, when they near shallow water the bottom actually slows them down and makes them rise from a flat ocean surface. This isn't by any means to say they aren't traveling at deadly speeds when crashing over beaches and villages, just not hundreds of miles per hour. As the home videos show, these surges of water were not 50 feet high as hollywood would lead us to believe, but a mass of water moving across the ocean floor and continuing onto the beaches with great force and power. After the initial surge and the rushing water and other hazards in it have taken their toll, danger still lies in the backflow towards the beach. This is where most of the victims that drown are found, out to sea. :frown: ........................MP

Remarkable to say the least.
Scary to think what it would be like if it was to happen here. Say like in San fransico or LA.

What an AMAZING video!!! Thanks Rich!
I cannot tell you how much I grieve for all the lives lost in this disaster. I am so sad and my heart is so heavy. Another 10,000 found in a small town in India with hundreds of bodies still floating in the ocean. I cannot even phathom what the final death count will be when it's all over. I'm sure many will never be found. :(

Good. There are 3 videos. The first one is spooky... The water keeps rising and the guy with the camera keeps saying sh!t, sh!t, sh!t and finally cuts out when it looks like he gets his camera wet.
WOW!!! Amazing footage Forensic!!! :2purples:
The one in that bar...dang! Did you see that place fill up and those 2 older white people go down in the rush of water. That one guy on top had his arm extended to try and help them. :jawdrop: :(
After watching all this, I would NEVER want to live on a beach.
