what do you guys think about a 2000 v6 4x4 toyota tacoma towing a 18 foot jet boat?
i think the truck has a towing capacity of 3500lbs, is that enough?

I think I wouldn't want to tow it very far. A couple miles to your local lake, through town, probably not a problem if you're careful. From San Diego to Parker? You wouldn't catch me doing it.
This has been covered a couple times on the forums. Although the towing capacity is 3500 lbs, I wouldn't want to tow that much with a Toyota. What do you figure your boat weighs? Loaded, fueled and packed up, probably close to that with the trailer.
The problem with the Toyota Tacomas isn't the pulling, it's the stopping and control in a panic situation. Something about a boat pushing you around just doesn't seem like fun to me. Then again, I've always been one to go big on the trucks just to be on the safe side.

sounds like a dumb question but why? is the boat and trailer weight more then that? or would it just be too much weight on the truck?

Nobody tows more than the Casanova.
Never tow any tandem axel with a mini truck
If it's a single axel, keep it under 3000 lbs and never on slick roads.
Ya often see spun out/jack knifed mini trucks with boats near the Bolsa Chica/Warner exit to Hunington Harbor.
Tandem axel trailers take control real quick.
Short distances, on dry pavement (remember morning fog wets the road), then you're probably ok.

I used to tow an 18' Sanger Superjet with my 91 toyota v-6 x-cab 4x4 all the time. Never had any issues. The tow capacity on the 4-cyl is 3,500, its 5,000 for the v-6. I say go for it, just drive mellow. They have more than enough power to pull that small of a boat. But like Jordy said, its stopping and like TPC said, its handling. So if you drive mellow you will be OK and will be legal if the boat/trailer is under 5,000 lbs.
The 2000 Tacoma enters the new model year with a new appearance package, exterior colors and daytime running lights on Anti-lock brake (ABS) equipped models. The new Full Color Key Package is only available with Sunfire Red Pearl. The package includes color-keyed bumpers, grille, door handles and outside mirrors. The optional Anti-lock Brakes System includes daytime running lights. The TRD Off-Road Package is again available on 4WD Xtracab models. The TRD Off-Road Package is not available on 4-cylinder with automatic transmission. The Tacoma is capable of towing up to 5,000 pounds when equipped with the V6 engine and 3,500 pounds with 4-cylinder engine. The Limited model offers one-touch Hi-4 selector switch for easy 4WD engagement.
