Something about this boat looks a little strange to me, is it common to put two 250's on a pontoon boat??

I think they were hitting speeds in exess of 80 mph last year!! and they are probly only going to be faster next year!! infomaniac raced there last year maybe he remembers how fast they were.

Uhh, ok. I didn't think a pontoon would go so fast. Are they stable? How fast do they get on a plane?

Not sure I want to be on a pontoon boat that can do 80 mph. There is a pontoon boat in Parker that flies by my boat like I am standing still, not like my boat goes that fast maybe 65 mph but I thought pontoon where for cruising around slow.

The JC Mfg Tri Toons and the Playcraft Powertoons run real good but they're
playing with fire going 80+ mph. What is going to happen the first time that
one of those pontoons has a bad weld. Goodbye boat, goodbye family,
because that one pontoon will act like a parachute in the water and will stop and the other ones will want to keep going. Not good. I'm not saying that
they are junk. They're real nice 35 to 45 mph boats but I wouldn't push it.

i agree withkeith we have that same pontoon boat but with a 135 marc and it is falling apart i cant imagine it with 2 250's on it.ive never ridden in a tritoon but i hope it acts better then a regular pontoon because about 25mph is as fast as i would ever want to go in it.

I have a new Bennington 25ft tri toon with a 225 Honda on the back. It feels very safe at full speed which is pretty close to 50MPH.

The record setting pontoons use twin 300 hp mercs. It bounces between Odysess and Playcraft in the low 80s. The record setting models have a lot of features not included on the run of the mill models, such as performance strakes and jack plates. Only the tritoons can cut the mustard with speed and handling using that much HP.
Considering the track record of v-hulls and cats doing over 80 mph, I feel that it is wrong to knock pontoons that do the same. Even in the hands of a pro, any boat can hit a wave wrong, or have something fail at speed. You go fast, you take the risk. I remember ride shotgun on a 750F that hit a set of tracks at 75 and I went 5 miles praying that the taillight would hold my weight. Of course, my rear felt better then, versus when my bike took a spill at 35 mph on gravel.

That's a crazy ass picture!! I know you don't turn at 81 MPH but what about at lower speeds, how do they turn?

I was talking to a guy in Parker one time who had a Playcraft Powertoon with a 496 in it and he was saying that the thing ran close to 70. Never saw it run, but it definitely did not sound like a pontoon when it came pulling up to the dock. :D Don't know if I would want one, but it would be first to the party. ;) :)

At the boat show in Tulsa last year there was a Playcraft with a set of 300's hanging off the back! There was an old man there with it on the floor and he was funny as hell. Said he loved going up to Grand and blowing the go fast boats out of the water. If I remember right it was 28' and would run 91mph and they wanted $86,000 for it. I might have that backwards. But either way that is hauling ass.
It had all the creature comforts on it. I think it even had a grill! I can see it now...........hauling ass down the lake.............look left and see some 70 year old man blowing by you on a pontoon..........flipping burgers on the grill!!!!

building up my 24' v-hull to run 80mph all of a sudden sounds much safer than before!
It just goes to show you that anything can be fast with big HP pushing it.

Seadog--my concern in my previous post wasn't about the handling of the
pontoon boats. Frankly, I think they drive real nice. My concern is what will
happen when one of those pontoons gets a nice ding in it from hitting something minor in the water and then breaks the weld next to it and then
starts unpeeling like a banana. The person on the boat going 70 or 80 mph
will die. That's my concern. I sold JC's and Benningtons for years and they
didn't impress me as being something that would take much over 40 or 50 mph. I've thought about one of those pontoons unraveling and I don't think
that it would be pretty.

The Playcraft at the Tulsa Boat Show last year was the one that set the 81 mph record the previous year. The welds were all reinforced and made as smooth and sharp as possible. The strakes on that thing was awesome.
A lot of pontoons are now being offered with twins. There is also a story on a website about a pontoon manufacturer taking one of their models down the eastern coast to Florida. It was quite a story.

I was on havasu a couple years ago when about a 25ft pontoon went by me
like I was heading the other way. It had something in the big block range with
a set of real nice sounding Bassetts hanging out the back. Definatly wasn't your grand dads pontoon.
