Ok Im looking to swap my TH 350 tranny to a 700r4 mega monster from monster motorsports but the gross towing weight is 10,000lbs. I need to knwo how much my boat weighs with my truck so i don;t blow another tranny.I was just wondering how much ya'lls jet boats weigh, mine is an 18' Sadler with a 468 BBC, tandem axle trailer. Anybody got any numbers?

What ever you do try not to tow in overdrive. Transmissions don't like the load in overdrive especially the 700R4 and the 4L60E. I learned my lesson the hard way. I'll suffer the gas mileage to avoid having to pull my trans out everyyear. My boat on the trailer is about 5000lbs.

What difference does it make what our boats weigh? Go weigh yours.

many truck stops have public scales and around here alot of the packing plants have scales they will let you use as well.

many cities/counties have certified scales. look them up in the phone book, ask DMV, call highway patrol. it's really cheap.. last one I did in denver to weigh my trailor for reg. was about 8 bucks. also I know this sounds hidious , but many garbage dumps have them also . A BIG 10-4 on the overdrive while towing. lock-up converters like to "search" with alot of weight when on an incline. I've sometimes had them do it just going over an over pass. when you tow alot of weight you just have to accept the reduced mileage. my experiences were with an R-700. Personally I like the super-turbo hydromatic 400. just cant beat em for G.M. R.B.

The transmission Im thinking of buying form monster motorsports is anything but a stock 700r4. Its built to handle 500 horsepower and it has a higher 3rd and 4th gear servo to hold it in those gears longer before having to downshift. Here's the website: www.eatmyshift.com

Just about any truckstop will have a scale. $8 foots the bill. CAT scales are very good, and their signs are the same color as Caterpillar heavy equipment. Pull on the scale, press the button and the gal will come on the speaker with a worse attitude and clarity than that of any McDonalds and ask "Is this a first weigh or re-weigh?" Tell her to stuff it and that this is personal. Scales almost never have a waiting line, so you'll be able to pull on the scale, put the tongue jack down, disconnect and pull the truck off of the scale, leave the boat and trailer there to get an accurate reading on the weight if you really want to. When you get that done, you can take the boat to the lake, leave it with a friend and come back and reweigh the trailer. Subtract the difference and you'll know that exact weight of the boat gove or take a few pounds for fuel. -Wet

Been there done that. I've got every goody known to man in my overdrive tranny. Haven't had a problem since. But for some reason that torque converter keeps coming apart now. Even though you have all those good parts in the trans it is still going to get hot on you towing in overdrive. Ask any trans. builder and they will tell you that heat kills transmissions. I agree that keeping the 350 or even going to 400 with the gear vendor is the best bet.

It's a gear splitter, if I'm not mistaken... or an overdrive/underdrive unit anyways... They ain't cheap, that I do know. What gear ratio you got in your truck? I've got an 18' Avenger with a BBF on a single axle trailer. Weighs 3000 lbs. on the nose. So far I've only pulled it with my Ford and it pulls it in overdrive just fine, but I've got 4.10 gears in my truck. Pull that bitch 70-75 like it ain't even back there :crossx:

You can also find scales at some of the places that sell stone and bulk materials for landscaping.

Copy that. I run a truck scale at a gravel pit so it was easy for me. Every now and then somebody comes in wanting to weigh something for whatever reason and we don't even charge them for it. :shift:

Trailer, boat, full of gas weighs 3450. Figure the trailer weighs 1k+ alone.
