I would say that is probably the average speed of the peoples boats on the boards, but production boats and pontoons still are in the majority on the water, which would bring the average way down.

I am going to say 50mph. I see alot of slow ass boats out there and they will bring the average speed down a bit, especially considering your average 20+'r does 65mph and your occasional built speed boats will do around 80mph.

If you figure time drifting and time spent at the sand bar you bring that average WAAAAY down :D :D

I am going to say around 55.....the average for custom boats which are less in numbers to the production boats is around 65...The production boats are between around 47-50...and the toons bring it down further....On the lake, there are a very small % overall of boats actually going over 85-90..

But there is a large majority who think their boats do 85-90. :)

Ya I have thought of going with an onboard type of gps. I have an old Nordskog water pickup type but when I get over 60 and sart trimming the boat out I can pretty much forget about it.

I have a pretty good mechanical speedo.. but its always off about 3 mph in either direction up to 100.. then its about gps and RPM's

Ok I'm new at this. Hope it doesn't show too bad. I just got my first BIG boat and a new gps unit. How far off are speedo's on average and how acurate is the speed on gps. I was under the impression that gps is the tits.

Speedo accuracy varies. The boat I have now is pretty right on with GPS, but I have had boats that were off as much as 5mph.

We use GPS's every day at work......
VERY accurate...... So accurate that the military adjusts the accuracy as necessary....It's called DOP, or dilution of precision, they are able to adjust the accuracy during war time so that the bad guy's can't use our system against us. Military & civilian planes and such have receive devices called WAAS receivers to compensate for the intended DOP.
Put it this way.....Alaska Airlines planes can do complete GPS take-off's & landings in zero visibility with a "Heads-Up" display on the windscreen........now that's accurate.
Pitot tube speedo's are typically happy/sad by 3-5 MPH.
I have a color moving map GPS that I move from my truck to the boat, or to a helicopter if I'm flying......Wouldn't fly without one.
Also....In the off chance I get caught out on the lake after dark....I mean REALLY dark......I can run down the center of the lake from the Springs to Thompson Bay in the pitch dark without problems......The GPS keeps me right down the center....
And yes......I have tested it many times during the day to confirm..... :D
GPS ROCKS.....

Just a note that handheld gps has an error of 25+- in distance. Error in elevation 20+-. Error in speed is 2-3 mph. I use it on a every day at work.

Thanks for the info. On my test drive about a month ago Gamin gpsV showed 94.7. I looked up from the trim gauge and I was just about outta lake. Had to throttle back and turn that sucker around.

I've GPS'd my boat going up and down river in Parker and I topped out at the same speed but I got there a lot faster going down river. My best speed to date was in havasu coming from the sandbar with 3 guys and about 40 gallons of fuel. Although the air temp was a little cooler.
