I hate to spam this, but I am about to put an ad in a bunch of places and figured there may be some people in San Diego who are interested in working for a company on a rocket.
A couple of things. Experience in the boat industry is not only not neccessary, it is not encouraged. We are doing things so differently that I want to train people how to do it right, not train out what someone else would settle for. I am looking for consumate craftsmen who are looking to always do it the best way they know how, while keeping time and efficiency in mind. Second, I am looking for people with a "till complete" attitude. Goal oriented, quality and pride driven self starters.
From the rigging/installation side we are looking to fill two riggers positions, lead and apprentice. Lead rigger will be expected to have experience with power tools and shop tools in general. They should be used to craftsmanship and take pride in their work. Knowing how to use a bandsaw, air reciprocating saw, table saw, drill etc... is a must. Those applicants who provide their own tools will be eligible for higher pay initially.
Apprentice rigger is for a lesser skilled craftsman. This is someone who initially can use wrenches, has light fabrication skills and can take the direction of the lead rigger and myself easily. Prep work, follow up and cleanup will all be part of this position. This position has a lot of potential for upward mobility.
The second catagory of hiring is for two laminator positions. We have already got our lead laminator, so both of these are for lamination labor essentially. Keep in mind, with our resin infusion process, there is no wet layup hazards and mess anymore. Laminators are merely installing pre-CNC'ed kits using spray glue and scissors. All of the "wet" work is done in the vacuum bag and is for the most part hands off. These laminators will become two of the only people in the area that are experienced in this method of construction, and I promise you it is going to be the way boats are built from now on.
We are going to be doubling the number of each shortly as well. Meaning of course, there will be opportunity for advancement to a more experienced management position available to the best of the initial hires. The apprentice rigger position would be the most obvious as they could become the second crew's lead rigger shortly.
After a probation period, we will be providing benefits as well as the potential for flex hours if the situation dictates. We will be actively and regularly providing training and cross training on everything from a different department in the shop to sales. Women are encouraged to apply as well. The resin infusion laminator position in particular is being very, very well served by women across the composites industry in areas other than boats. Wind blades, composite cars etc... We want a well rounded and versed workforce that is looking to be part of something that built to the highest standards by the best team ever assembled to do the job.
I put this up here first as most people here are very familiar with the project, and are looking forward to seeing it hit the water. We will be ramping up fast, and I need enthusiastic people to become part of the team.
Respond to me at wes@tridentboats.com if you are interested, or know someone who might be. Lead/apprentice rigger positions are available now, and the laminator positions start in February.

Yes! That is a surge period for us. We are expecting to have a rough curve going from one to three molds available. We will need to expand the learning quickly while retaining cost controls.
The goal is to fully equip and use three molds this year. This crew is required for each mold in use. Each mold will be in lamination for one week, rigging for two and prep/upholstery install/test/detail etc.. for another one. Meaning, two rigging crews per mold, one lamination crew per mold and one final crew per mold.

Thanks for the leads folks. The lead rigger looks well filled out right now. No less than 10 applicants thanks to you guys.
The laminator position is a great job. It will be learning a very, very innovative process and will become autonomous very quickly. I have a consultant coming in to do the first couple boats, but the cream of the crop of the laminators will be walking into the lead position quickly.
Carpentry skills are a real plus.

OK, bad term I guess. We are not looking for a laminator anymore.
It turns out, people have a set version in their heads of what a laminator is, and the job they do. So the first item of business is...
Change the title!
We are now looking for two "dry composite installation technicians"
or... "cored composite manufacturing specialists".
Hell, think of your own phrase if it helps.
This is a good job folks. The skinny on it is that we are looking for skilled labor for this job. Experience cutting fabrics and templates is awesome. Cabinetry or woodworking experience is the best though. We need to dry-fit the outer and inner composite layers and cut to fit the 1 1/4" CoreCell. Keep in mind that with our manufacturing tolerances as tight as they are, a real handle on quality control and pride in workmanship is a neccessity here. We are going to be working a good crew, with the very best safety and comfort practices in place. The days of the acetone shower are gone as far as I am concerned.
Thanks again for those who have called already, I can't wait to meet a lot of you, and sorry for the spam.

Well, sometimes timing is everything. I am now proudly wearing a black Trident button up shirt, the kind that the riggers like to wear :D I noticed this thread earlier this week and knowing that my current contract ends this Friday, I gave Wes a call. After a chat on the phone, I drove to Trident and interviewed with both Wes and Craig. The energy that both of them have towards the company is truly inspiring. They both have the direction, focus, dedication and clear vision of what Trident is. It's a place you WANT to work if you have any kind of integrity and pride in what you do. I have never been so happy to work in my life. Yesterday we did some work on the boat (not sure if I am to disclose what we did), but just working with the team was not only a pleasure, it was a place where I know that my meticulous nature and attention to detail will finally be appreciated. I didn't get any sleep last night. My mind is already racing and ready to contribute the highest level of detail both physically on the boat and intellectually into the business process. If you are out there and are considering the "dry composite installation technician" position, it would be in your best interest to call immediately. When I was there with the team, about 30 people were calling trying to take my new job away!!!! I look forward to seeing you all out at Trident the next time you stop by!

I have never felt so solid hiring anyone. Talk about an easy decision...
Justin and I did the worst thing you can do on a boat yesterday. Grind fiberglass. He is probably still pulling it out of his teeth from smiling the whole time... ;)
Seriously though, I can't wait to start building boats. He is like a sponge for technique with tools and stuff, and is a real pleasure to instruct. It is really cool having someone listen, then do as explained.
Anyway, I am gushing here. I am headed back in to the garage, but am glad to see you as stoked to be here as we are to have you.
This is going to be a great year...
