Billy, I think the word your looking for is Crazy
BTW, I did see the boat run last year, and it is a very good running boat with the SS engine in it, and very clean for a boat of it's age. It going to be a great boat for somebody. :D

No whirlaway due to the box right?

No, you are incorrect. It has the whirlaway, which is required by APBA.

Oh ok, sorry about that.
I posted about a Starfire a nieghbor had awhile ago.
What do I know?
I thought there was an issue with the Starfire and a whirlaway.

The seat attachment is built into the stringer to keep the center of gravity as low as possible.

kipperps28
01-31-2005, 06:46 PM
The stringers are cut down so the seat drops. Steve was more concerned about CG than he was about getting flung free. For those who don't know. this is Doug Jancura's boat (killed last year testing a PS- not this boat). Cool guy, and this is a super clean boat. Originally, it had a Boss Ford in it (scary fast).

The Jones "Starfire" is an amazing little boat. They're shorter than the usual circle racers and have fixed plates with the left side extending back really far. They are common in the northwest since that is where they were conceived. I think the first ones were built in the 60's.

And not all Starfires were 16 foot racers.....in the 60s a family ski version was made with a totaly different deck with seating for five and a length of 17'8. I just found a beauty in a boat house, metalflake green and pristine! They must have had two hull and deck molds or this was simply discontinued.

The 18' ski boat was discontinued because they would not sell. Steve Jones disposed of the molds before I went to work for him in '74. My brother has one which he is restoring. It has a bottom and deck completely unlike that of the race boat.

Is there any reason why the hulls were set up w/ fixed cav plates vs' moveable ones?

My previous neighbor's boat looked as long as my jet. 17-19 foot or so.
I am pretty sure his boat had a movable cav plate.

This explains it. Why I hadnt seen any! So any idea how many are left? I will tell Vern how rare his boat is, some of you may know him. Great Guy!

In theory, I am told, they didnt need one! On wide sweeping corners that a racer finds up here, they merely backed off on the hydraulic throttle on entry and much like a skipping flat rock, bounced lightly around it. Mr Jones had a different idea and I believe he once said that a moveable plate was a bandaid for a bad handling hull design....This came from a forner Jones racer who finished right behind the Master at the Heildeberg Nationals in 1975 with a left hand prop 427 Ford in the 16 footer! Now, how good do you think you are? One problem came at over 100 mph but I wont go into that, maybe Kipper will!

My dad raced SK's & SS's from the mid 60's to about 1974 here in the south. In 1985 or 86 we went to St Petersburg to watch a race. And there were two boats there from Washington that were much faster than any other Flatbottom there. I believe that they won every heat. I am pretty sure that it was this hull that you guys are talking about. I remember it being a Jones boat. Having grown up wandering the circle boat pits, I enjoy watching the circle boats a Phoenix. You guys put on a good show.

Following Steve Jone's death in 1981, a group of active racers from several camps combined forces in 1983 to become "Team 400." Sunset Chevrolet, owned by Jerry Yoder and Ray Sparling, of Sumner, Washington, joined the team as an official sponsor. Dave and Pam Villwock and their SuperStock, "Good Vibrations SS400," ran alongside Paul Casura's "Excitable Boy" SK400. The Stich brothers--Kevin, Shawn and Darrin--were on board from the "Direct Connection" PC600 to round out the crew, tending to the two Sunset boats. The yellow SS400 and the orange SK400 were a potent two-boat combination that raced quite extensively and effectively throughout the United States. In a 15 year timespan, these boats won the following APBA honors:
Four (4) World's records
Four (4) National championships
Eight (8) Western Divisional championships
Three (3) Eastern Divisional championships
Two (2) "Hall of Champions" drivers honors

Thanks old timer, pretty good accomplishments i'd say. I'm trying to remember, was Steve's PC record set with Rodney's motor ? Wasn't the Phaff motor in Steve's own red boat?

stickmann

Steve had a Phaff 3.25" stroke ZL-1, 405cid dry sumped BBC in his red boat.
The Hot Shot had a 488cid Rodney Thorsness BBC with Dominators.
