we have the 496 HO with 155 hours on it and i love it. been completely trouble free and has good power for what it is.

FYI: 8.1=496, 8.2=502. 496=Gen VII, 502=Gen VI
502 = good internals
496 = boat anchor internals.
both are good motors for their intended purpose though.

Wow! I'm all screwed up here, the motor is a 502 470HP

is that an HP 500? (painted all blue with chrome CMI headers?) if so good motor. this is worth more.
If its all black with cast manifolds then its the regular ol merc 502 (415 hp) still a good motor.

Couldn't disagree with you more. 496 (8.1L) has great internals when its not supercharged. There are literally more 496Mags and 496HO's running all over the world in both stock form and many with our kits and they already outnumber all the blue motors that Mercury racing has ever built in total. You might want to put that fact in your thoughts before you pass off as an expert!

If anyone knows the 496's, it is certainly Ray and Larry of Raylar.
No need to cheerlead, but Merc would not be making so damn many of them and going into virually every "Non Super High Performance" boat out there if they were total crap. Granted, I had a stock Mag give out with 30 hours, but it was replaced with a completely brand new long block by Merc immediately, prior to going with my twin Raylar 600 setup.
