Two different modes of shipping typically. For the $100-200 stuff, the shipping gets it from one terminal to another. It costs considerably more to go door to door. Additionaly, the folks advertising(companies) on Ebay probably don't pay full pop retail for their shipping either. Take Summit as an example, I think its somethin like $100 terminal to terminal, and only like $15 more to go to your door. Volume definitely helps with the cost.

Freightquote.com (http://www.freightquote.com/)
And Terminal to Terminal is much cheaper.

I've used Forward Air to ship a couple of bikes from La to NY, but I don't know if they do engines or not. It was about $200.00, I'm not sure what they get now, this was a couple of years ago. They had a special container made up for bikes, and it was included in the price.

There are lots of freight classes when it comes to shipping stuff, and mosty of the carriers charge by the class. I think the least expensive classes are machine parts. I had a set of Chysler hemi heads shipped from Utah that cost me 175.00 for shipping, the 2nd set came from LA and they cost 1/2 as much to ship, because the guy knew how to work the system. I wish I could remember what was the cheapest. I'll see if I still have any of the paperwork around here.

You may want to check with Infomaniac. I know he has shipped from Oaklahoma to San Diego. He can probably give you some feedback.
