my friend is looking at a 1995 27ft advantage at a dealer.looks to be very well taken care of but the 502 has 538 hours on.of course my guestion is how many hours should a stock 502 get before having to be freshened up? ive never had even close to that many hours on a boat. also whats a good price if it does need rebuilt.it looks as though its been serviced every year.

we have 650 on our nautique and allwe have done is recommended maintianence. The thing still runs like it did when it was brand new.

hard to predict how many hours it COULD run...so many variables, driving habits etc...
seen them broken with a handful of hours, and seen upwards of 1,000 still going strong.
i think if the deal is right he should go for it

A very well taken care of 502 or 454 (unless it is a performance version)
should last at least 1000-1500 hours.
If it has sustained high RPM use, then anything over 500-600 hours
should have the valve springs, retainers and valves examined, or a
least a valve job performed which gives you a chance to look at the head
gaskets or possible corrosion issues.
I have a Mark IV 454 in one of the boats that has 925 hours on it since
I bought it new and still pulls hard to 5000 and does not smoke, rattle
or use oil.
I would buy it in a heartbeat if he likes the boat. Get a good deal and
even if you have to re-power it in a couple of years it will be less than
5K to stick a new crate motor in it or rebuild what you have.

Sound like a nice boat. My 330 merc went 650 hours before it popped. It was well maintained but it wasn't affraid of full throttle :p Speaking from experience, installing a new 502 will be closer to 10K than 5K because your going to want to replace the exaust, starter and at least tear the drive down for inspection and replace a few bearings. Start adding $$$$$$$ from there.
