WORLD'S LARGEST MOTORCYCLE MANUFACTURER Since the early 1990s, the Chinese motorcycle industry has seen a rapid expansion. In the 1990s, China's motorcycles production grew at an average annual rate of 46 per cent. The annual production showed a sharp increase from less than 50,000 units in 1980 to 10 million in 1997 (Refer Exhibit I for growth in Chinese motorcycle population between 1983 and 1995). By 2003, China's motorcycle production was around 14 million, roughly half the world's total motorcycles production (Refer Exhibit II for leading motorcycle manufacturers in the world).

The dramatic increase in the sales of Chinese motorcycles posed a threat to global leaders like Honda and Yamaha whose market share in China and nearby countries was declining rapidly . For instance, in Vietnam, Honda's market share had declined from nearly 90 per cent to only 30 per cent in the five years since Chinese manufacturers began selling motorcycles in that country. The average export price of a Chinese motorcycle had dropped from $700 in the late 1990s - when it was already several hundred dollars less than the equivalent Japanese model - to below $200 by 2003-04.
Chongqing, a southwest China municipality, one of the major production bases for several large motorcycle manufacturing companies in China, emerged as the key location for Chinese motorcycle exports. However, the thriving Chinese motorcycle industry came under severe criticism from many parts of the world, especially Japan. The Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry statistics indicated that China produced about 11 million motorcycles in 2002, nine million of which were imitations of existing Japanese products.

Exactly, but the Japanese got better and produced a better and cheaper bike and now most Americans state wholeheartedly Ride Red, or Buy a Yamaha Rhino versus some Polaris made 2x2..
The Chinese are just beating the Japanese as the Japanese beat the Americans....produce like goods at a cheaper cost....Once they get the Quality part down that it is in the neighborhood of the Japanese Bikes you can bet they will dominate here as well......Just look at the 50 market.....Honda XR50's will be a blip on the map compared to the Chinese 50's within 12 months..
Remember this name....Linovo! They purchased IBM's Computer and Laptop Thinkpad/Thinkdesk line in the last year....They are the largest computer manufacture in China.....this is their first dive into the American market with their brand of products....they have been making the Thinkpad's for years under the IBM logo....Now they have their brand. They will be a force to reckon with for Dell and HP in the states within 18-24 months.

Well....they gotta export'em somewhere. Because when I was there last year, they started banning small motors and scooters in the large cities because they were choking up the place so bad. No motorcycles in Shenzhen...but I wouldn't ride one there anyway. If you bust your ass, you are pretty much screwed until somebody can stretcher you to the next Hong Kong ferry... and most of the driving looked...rather asian.
I did see one cool motor there...saw a 400-600cc sized crotch rocket that was a two stroke.
I'd love to have one of those to buzz around JBB's neighborhood with. Maybe if I try hard enough combined with JBB's backward scooped cobra, house prices there may be depressed enough that I can buy a lot for my single wide.

About a year ago Cycle World had a ride report: $1000 Motorcycles on a 1000 Mile Ride. They had a bunch of old used bikes they got for under a thousand bucks and went for a 1000 mile ride test.
The roster of bikes were these:
1. David Edwards - VP & Editor in Chief - 1982 BMW R80G/S
2. Brian Catterson - Executive Editor - 1980 BMW R100
3. Mark Hoyer - Feature Editor - 1973 Yamaha RD350A
4. Matt Miles - Managing Editor - 2004 Morgen’s M/C Trail Master 200
5. Mark Cernicky - Assitant Editor - Honda XR80
6. Don Canet - Road Test Editor - 1986 Suzuki GSX-R1100
7. Ryan Dudek - Off-Road Editor - 1988 Yamaha YSR50
8. Allan Girdler - Contributing Editor - 1989 Honda XR250R
9. Calvin Kim - Online Services Editor - 1983 Honda FT500 Ascot
10. Keith May - Assitant Art Director - 1989 Yamaha XT600
Bike #4 was actually a brand new 2005 Chinese made Morgen 200. The engine seized up a couple of hundred miles into the trip. It looked pretty nice and was real cheap for a new bike, but you get what you pay for sometimes...http://www.***boat.com/image_center/data/500/886147_4711.jpg

I bet that is what we said about Yamaha's and Honda's 30 years ago.....and we probably said the same about Toyota's when they first came on the scene....
The Chinese will get better....it's amazing that Toyota is the major engine supplier now to Cart...
The Chinese are going to do the Japanese exactly what the Japanese did to the US...Cause you to get better, or cause you to get out of the market...might take several decades, but it took the Japanese half a century to become one of the largest automakers....it won't take that long for the Chinese.

That's what I thought...but it's something called a Great Wall or a SAFE. I heard that Toyota built a joint venture plant over there, but after the contract was up the Chinese guys just kept making them. I rode in a couple and they seemed to drive a 4runner except they had some 4 cylinder and a Chrysler A/C system. The price would be around $10,000.

I would agree that its quite ironic that the Japs are whining about the Chinese "assault" on their market. The chinese quality has a long way to go that for sure, but just like south Korea has moved in and up, so will the chinese. Not every brand, cuz I think there will be quality segments like there are everywhere else.
How many people bought VW Phaetons? $64,000 for a VW? Not likely, their market is not perceived as high end......neither will the Chinese entries be. The Japanese vehicles were pretty lame when they started, but over the years they got it right, so much so as to teach us some lessons on quality. The Chinese will try to do probably do the same to them.....but I don't think they will ever get to quite the same level of quality.....
